Police: 13-year-old part of car theft ring

ROCK HILL - The arrest of a 13-year-old driver after a short chase helped police break up a two-state car theft ring, Winthrop University police Chief Frank Zebedis said.

The ring has stolen at least nine cars on college campuses and apartments in North Carolina and South Carolina, the campus police chief said.

A police officer on a stakeout Wednesday night saw the boy driving and after checking the license plate found the vehicle was stolen, Zebedis said.

The 13-year-old tried to speed away, but he was arrested after a short chase.

The investigation into the 13-year-old suspect led police to arrest a 14-year-old boy and 19-year-old Christopher Lee Thornton. They face several charges of grand larceny and criminal conspiracy, authorities said.

Police also found nine 1994 to 1997 Honda cars stolen since last weekend, Zebedis said.

Damage to the cars was minimal, and none of the cars had keys in the ignition or showed any evidence of broken glass, he said.

"These guys knew what they were doing," Zebedis said. "It would happen so fast, you wouldn't even know they were stealing cars."
