Default need help over heated ??

hello honda-tech

i need some help i went to visit some friends about a hour away by highway. So im driving home everything is fine and i notice my heat shoot up i have the heater on in the car on full blast i was travvling at about 115 km/h and its liek - 15 with the windchill so i was kind of shocked. It keep going up and up so i was just about ready to pull over and its like the nedle went limp and jsut dropped back to regualr operating tempature and was fine the rest of the way home no smoke nothing the fan was working as well when i got home. Did my thermostat just stick closed or open?? i am a little nervous now as i make that commute 2 - 3 times a week and dont want to get stranded on the side of the road in this weather. its a 90 cx with d15b2 motor any help is greatly appricated.

Thanks

My car was doing this about 4 months ago. I thought it was the thermostat so I put a new one in...it didn't change anything. What I changed was the sending unit...the piece right under the distributor. I put a new on of those in and it has worked fine since then.

When was the last time you did some maintaince on your cooling system? If it's been a while, then look into replacing the thermostat, radiator cap, flushing the coolant out and replacing with fresh coolant, and perhaps even the hoses may need some attention. Also, you may need to replace the waterpump and/or the radiator.

replace the thermostat and change the coolant first, if the gauge still fluctuated change the sender. I had one go bad and it was reading low the hot then low, It could be your problem as well
