does anyone own a Phantom Grip LSD, and what do you think about it?
I have a 98 prelude and I ordered a 901 gold Phantom Grip. This is the one that is sopposed to fit on my car. I got a call from the installer that told me that the phantom grip did not fit because some disc in my transmission was off an accord. The transmission is a m2y4 which is the original tranny one off my car. The installers told me to buy 902 gold PG that is for the accord 4 cly. I would like to know if any one has had this problem? Also if you guys that own phantom grips can give me feed back on how the PG's perform over time. I still have the oppertunity to return this product. Thank you
M2y4 is a prelude tranny, don't know what they're smokin. My brother has had phantom grip lsd on his b16 del sol now for bout 4 years and he hasn't had a problem yet. He hasn't really putten much stress on his tranny likes slicks or anything though but he's launched it b4 and tranny has been holding up with the phantom grip in it for 4 years just fine now.
i have the phatom grip on my h22 and i think it works. i'v done a burnout in water and both tires where spinning and i can tell by the way the front end completely moves to the side with shifting and spinning the tires(if it was pegg legging then i think the car would have gone straite and only spun the one tire)
so in my opion its works 90 % of the time (one time i did a burnout and i think only one tire mark was there)
but i flat rated it when i intalled it myself and didnt grind down the spider gears cuz i was lazy and if i did it the right way it would have a flat and better sureface and that would make it grip better
so that my 2 pennies

I have one...I love it...it works like a "mini locker" should. Limits the slip of the wheel with the least resistance. Anyways.....easy install....pretty simple so theres not any major moving parts to break, and much cheaper than a LSD. I have said before the Phantom Grip and a light flywheel made the difference to me. My car revs great and much less torque steer!!
I would put one on my next car!!

901 gold.....I have had it in about 5 years. No problems at all. Also installed a ACT stage 2 and lightened flywheel to 14 pounds. Plenty of launches and track days as well.. GL
what disc are we talking about.....I installed mine myself and dont remember any disc? here is the tech page on PG's website. Hope it helps. personally I think your garage is full of it...but thats just an opionion...and we all know about them!! I mean its a pretty cut and dry install.

no its a M2S4....but the 901 gold fits many cars including 92-99 prelude with all tranny's. When I recieved mine it had GSR written on it in marker, and it works great. Still haven't got a definitive answer on the "disc" issue? what disc is your shop talking about?
Junk.......Get a REAL LSD like a Quaife....We have fixed way to many transmissions that have the phantom grips installed in them. Metal shavings everywhere...that and diff pins that shoot out of the side of the case(normal in honda transmissions that still utilize the differential spider gear pin). If you are gonna race. Do it right the first time.
I think it is wrong for a company to market such a product as so. I also think it is wrong for them to box up two square chunks of metal, some springs, cheap washers, a sticker and sell it for 200-300 bucks. A fool is born every second....
The key word in the product is "phantom"

I dont race except for open night at the strip and a little autocross. I change my tranny fluids about once a year. Never seen any metal shavings. Your so quick to call people fools. Maybe you should've kept your latter comment to yourself, that way you wouldn't sound like such a fool!. Im sure your a reputable shop thats seen plenty of trannys opened up. And HOW hard the individual driver is on his tranny surely has something to do with that as well.
My transmission is a m2y4. That is what comes in the 5 gen base prelude. for some reason my dif was off a accord tranny. It seems that my tranny came like that from factory therfore I had to exchange the 901 gold for a 902 gold that is the PG for a 4 cly accord. The 901 gold did not fit I between the spyder gears.

Most of the shaving would be attached to the magnet. Not quick to call some fools...We have been doing this for a long time and say the same thing over and over. So there is nothing quick about it. There is also nothing smart about putting two blocks of metal and some springs in between your spider gears. In other words..its stupid. Put a real LSD if you are serious about what you are trying to do...key word serious. Then call it a day.
4WSi_guy , Care to explain how the phantom grip works? When two metals forcefully rub against eachother(because the spider gears will still try to spin)..Tell me what the byproduct is...Now explain to me what is not foolish about it.
There are a couple benefits of a real LSD
-Traction being one of them
-Eliminated the stock differential pin that tends to wanna slide out and bust a hole in the side of your case.

alright.......your the expert so I won't continue arguing. But to answer your question as best I can. The plates use the spring pressure to limit the slip of the wheels during hard cornering. In straight line acceleration the plates pivot and lock the spider gears to limit slip and torque steer. You have lots of post and your own shop so I am not going to question your opinions and I do believe that you have seen many tranny's opened up. But if you dont have lots of money the PG is a good alternative in my opinion!!

I have seen to many disapointments and too many damaged transmissions. Its bad when a $200 hunk of metal ruins a $1000-$1500 transmission. Just seen it happen to many times. I wish I still had the picture of our pile of phantom grips that we used to have hanging in the shop. Then you would understand.
Not trying to beat up on anyone...just want people to see the downsides as well so that they can weigh the differences.

I just picked up my car. I had a PG installed because of the need to get the car back on the road. I wish I would have had the time to wait for the shipment of another type of lsd. The tranny was opened to install a Mfactory 4.64 FD. The engine is a stock h22a that has get been put in. What can i do to reduce the chances of the PG failing.
Best thing is to maintain the trans. Keep the fluid fresh with OEM Honda MTF. Take it easy on the trans until you are ready to swap over to an LSD unit. Hopefully they used a fresh roll pin and that should keep the diff pin secure for the time being. Best of luck and feel free to hit me up in the future with any tech questions
That new Final gear should wake that engine up nicely
