Motor oil for HIGH milage motor.....Questions..?
Hi there, i have a few questions in regards to the motor oil i been using. I use (walmart oil changes) Penzoil 5w/30, and have been questioning this weight in oil because the amount of miles my 92 accord EX has. It currently has about 159xxx, close to 160K, and was wondering what you guys with high milage run for weight. I live in Idaho, Cold winters, Hot summers, i guess this area would be considered SEVERE driving conditions. My veichle sees about 425 miles a week (highway miles at 75 mph or more).
15/40 Schaeffer's synth blend oil is fully available to me from work, Any comments in regards to this weight and type of oil...?
Last, anybody out there use the FLEETGUARD (Commercial, Industrial Brand) oil, air, fuel filters. These to come to me at a great price, considering walmart uses the plain jane Fram ph3593A filter. Anybody here run Fleetguads in their Honda or other personal veichles....?
Need some feedback, Thanks.

I've got a 98 EX 4 Cyl sedan and I've been running Mobil 1 5-W30 since I got it at 82K. Right now it's got 120k and it's like new. I drive about 275 miles per week. 2/3s highway/ 1/3 city. I change the oil every ~3000 miles as well. I switched over to the Extended Performance 5W-30 this last oil change. I'm just running the Fram toughguard oil filter as well.
Good luck.
Good luck.
Pennzoil is crappy product, ask me why i know.
a cheap and proven product is the valvoline maxlife, it's not a addictive/reinforced regular oil like most "high mile formula". it's a product designed for older car, with loaded wear protector and other good stuff for sealing and wear.
it's a bargain for such a good oil, it's around 12 dollar a jug
i use that on all my cars over 75k

not really, you don't really need to use thicker oil in most cases.
that's what the old tymer do when there's no high mileage formula availble in the market.

how u know? (couldnt resist asking)
not jack ur thread but, whats better for my accord, pretty much just run to school and back, haulin *** doin it, hittin VTEC, its 5miles if i take the short route or like 6.3 if i take the scenic route with little or no traffic and lots of curves.... its got 90K on tha clock
right now, i have mobil1synthetic with a K&N oil filter, but would it be better to use some high mileage bullcrap or just stick with synthetic and change it religiously
alsoooo, this been buggin the hell out of me since i saw it a week ago (cant believe i overseen this as i read all my owner's manulas to every car weve ever had, front to back) supposedly, honda says that i shold follow the maintenance schedule of SEVERE DRIVNG CONDITIONS if you drive less than 5 miles per trip most of the time
ugh, whats yall professional HT opinion, be real, if i just take my longer curvy route will i be OK to change oil every 5k instead of 3750(severe), i know the recommended oil interval for normal driving is 7500, thats too long

So i should be using some sort of extended life filter and oil, then...? To me, 3000 mile oil changes, is way too shorts, i considering my highway driving. For the most part, it's good on oil, every month or so i have to add a bit of oil, i think it's losing it from the top two bolts on the valve cover. About two weeks ago i had no 5w/30 oil to add some to top it off, so i used 30 weight castrol that i put in my riding lawnmower. Dont know how harsh this is on this engine.
So NOBODY out there runs 15/40 motor oil, Wow, they use that **** religiously around my job and area....?

I've used Mobil Syn ever since I got my car with Mobil Filter. I heard bad things about Fram so I stayed away from it. I recently went back and tried dyno oil and after about 2500 miles I started feeling the car is really really sluggish...not sure if it was lost of compression? (I redline a lot) or if it was because of my 6th gen Auto Transmission...but anyhow so I switched back to syn oil, right now Im trying Royal Purple...so far so good, the engine runs REALLY smooth. Still feel like the car is slow, but at least the engine feels smooth...down side of using Royal Purple is that you spend about 40 bucks just buying it...
yeah maybe if you're in a warm environment all the time it might be worth it to choose a more viscious oil. I don't know about that high, but I've been using the high mileage 5w30 Valvoline for a while and I won't say it's great but I have no complaints. I burn practically no oil and never have to add any between the 3k mile intervals. I have 176k on the car to.
Synthetic might be another good option but you need to make sure you car is in great shape. Naturally you will burn synthetic more though... so don't worry if that happens. Running synthetic will deteriorate a lot of the carbon buildup and allow for any potentially leaky seals to become leaky once the carbon that sealed it up is gone.

My motor has about 136,ooo miles and I personally use valvoline 10w 30 and I personally like it and I am on the highway alot and put in any were from 250 to 3oo miles a week. However valvoline 5w 30w extended life is also a great oil, along with a good oil filter your set, so basically its all about personal preference.

our shop professor did an extensive oil testing on most of the product, the lower end pennzoil is pretty crappy, most of higher end product just reinforced crappy low end crap

Damn....i didn't know the motor had to be in tip top shape to use synthetic oil. I was just made aware we also carry Mobil 1 Full synthetic oil, 5w/30. I thought i'd try this and see what it does for my High milage motor. But with this comment, i'm back to the drawing board, not to sure the condition of my engine, so do i want to risk it...?
This Mobil 1 is free to me, we have about 5, 55 gallon drums of this stuff. I was hoping to save some money and use this stuff. Same with the fleetguard filters, i can get these for my veichle anytime. I'm way overdue on a oil change, i was planning to change tommorow with the stuff i have now, should i reconsider and NOT use Mobil 1 Synthetic...? Any and all Comments welcomed, Thanks.

Does anyone here Object to using the OEM oil and filter, cause that's what i use on my 94 Lx right now it has 176,XXX miles on it and i drive 240 miles a week mostly city. 7head thanks for the input i'll stop using Pennzoil
I always use Castrol 10/30 and Fram every 3000 and have never had any problems. I've thought about trying out Syntec, but haven't been able to find a filter that claims it can go for as long as the oil. Does anyone know of one? I mean, if I'm going to have to change the filter, I'd just assume change the oil too.
