Fine as long as you don't lug the engine when you get into 4th/5th, meaning below 1000rpms or so (approx)

I do it all the time too... I never grid. Gotta make sure not to lug the engine. My favorites are 1 - 4, and 3 - 5...

I skip 3rd all the time for city driving. I would assume it's fine as long as your not redlining 2nd then powershifting into 4th or 5th.

just make sure you give your syncros enough time to catch up with eachother so there is no grindage. The syncros are going from one gear to the next, not skip one. It's fine as long as you let them catch up, when downshifting, rev match

What about shifting without the clutch? Not at high RPMs... but around 5-6K or so... it just goes in so smoothly without the clutch... is this bad?

No, accelerate normall to about 5,000 RPM, and slowly shift from 3rd to 4th (w/o clutch). The gears go RIGHT in like butter.

If you can do it well... got for it... it does cause extra wear on the syncros...

Well, there is no grindage, no noise, nothing! It just slips right in as if the clutch were in... Certain RPMS allow this... and I heard it has NO effect on the motor/tranny/clutch.

Shifting w/o the clutch is real tough on your synchros I thought... You can also downshit with out the clutch if you really want. You just have to pull it out of gear, rev the motor, and then push gently... it works!!!

ON my old SR5 I only used the clutch to start moving and never while drivin used the clutch, you can feel when its ready to slide in and out of gears just takes pratice but never force it ! and that car now has 200,000 miles!

shift slower so the rpms aren't as high when you engage and the grinding should not appear

That being said, I don't skip gears anymore cause I have a nasty habit of shifting fast (not drag racing fast but fairly fast).

this weird, say if you're in 3rd at 5k rpms, you can just pull the shifter out of 3rd and into 4th without stepping on the clutch?

yes i've seen people do that with their manual trannies and its ok as long as there is no grinding. you can do this much easier on dump trucks and tractors trailers that have no synchros(which requires you to double clutch).

Yes, if you pull it out of gear right after getting off the gas, it will come out very smoothly because the tran and half shaft are spinning at relatively the same speed. Remember that synchros aren't required when shifting into neutral .. you only need the clutch to disengage the engine/flywheel/halfshaft from the transmission, or when you're up-shifting, which allows smoother (and slower) engagement of the gears with the help of the synchros

cliff notes : yes

I bet this is even more fun on the Type R's but downshifting from 3,500 rpms in 4th to second is soooooooo much fun in the Si

if you learn to double clutch you can shift between any gears you wishes to with in the mechanical rpm range of the gear with out any problems. for example cruising along 30 mph in 5th and need to drop it in to first? no problem if you do it right. or, if you understand the rpm relationship between the gears, clutchless shifting is cooler. although it's a bit hard on the car if you do it wrong.

as far as i know, you should not skip gear while up-shifting. It is not very good to the tran.. For example, the 4th gear sychronizer are not design to match the rpm of 2-4 shift. It is design to match the rpm of 3-4 shift.

of course, everyone knows power shift (shift without clutch) do nothing except bad things to ur tran.
