I bought an SA2005 Pyrotech helmet last year from SoloRacer.com for under $150: http://www.soloracer.com/pyroopenfacesa.html
Works good...I like it. Our DMVR SCCA region has loner helmets available for those who don't have them for the events. We simply line them up near the grid and you jump out of your car and strap one on before your run...then take it off for the next person to use after your run. I'd say we have about a dozen loners.

Granted most people wont want to pay the money but my ARAI hands down is the best helmet I have ever worn or owned, or even tried on. they're pricey though, but my brains worth a lot more then anything else anyways
Here's a little known fact.
The Arai GP-5S is in every way identical to the GP-5K. The GP-5S retails for ~$350 in Japan. The GP-5K is $800 here in the US. Both are SA2005 helmets (although some vendors are still offloading SA2000 stock), and should be accepted by any sanctioning organization. Shipping EMS would be around $50. The issue is finding a vendor willing to trust a US buyer. Japanese culture really hates credit institutions. Credit cards, Paypal, etc. are usually a no-go.

One big factor in buying a helmet is comfort, which is why you need to try on a helmet before buying. And high price doesn't guarantee better comfort. When I was shopping around for an SA2005 helmet last year, I thought I would get an $800 Arai helmet, because people told me it would fit better and be lighter in weight. When I tried them on at the shop, I found that the Arai didn't fit well at all, and the $300 Bell helmet fit well and was comfortable, and the difference in weight was insignificant, so that's what I bought. Try a bunch on, and get the one that fits you best.

100% agreement
and if you go to a shop to try them on, buy it there! don't use their storefront and overhead of giving you that kind of fitting opportunity and then lowball them for a $20 savings after shipping from the net.

He also carries Zamp and Simpson as well. He is one of the cornerstone vendors for NASA Arizona. If you race this could turn into your new candy store.
