Default Any obd1 cars converted to obd2 for the BAR and passed?.. & some tech Q's.

My buddy is considering on going from obd1 to obd2 so he can bar his swap.

What kind of hoops did you have to jump through at the BAR ref to pass your obd1 car with your obd2 swap? Any problems or issues that came up?

Also, Just figuring out whats needed to make the swap.. if im missing anything let me know.
-obd2 engine harness
-obd2 distributor wiring
-obd2 ecu
-obd2 alternator

Then a couple of questions:
-obd2 cat w/ 2ndary o2. - Question here: Running the obd2 engine wire harness with the 2nd o2 plug. Do you have to run an extra wire from the plugs on the right shock tower to the ecu? If so, what the pin out?

-obd1 to obd2 jumper harness - Question here too: Will the ref care if he's using a jumper harness, or do they need you to solder all your wiring to obd2 plugs?

-one more thing: What do you have to do about the obd2 test port?

Thanks..

you dont need to. just swap in the obd-2 motor and run a obd-1 ecu and make sure all the smog equipment is hooked up for that particular year you are trying to pass. its been done many times. i did my cousins 98 gsr into a 92 civic and passed it as a 95 gsr. hit me up if you need more info

thats not my point.. I know you can run a obd2 motor and use obd1 parts.. thats ez.

He WANTS to make it an obd2 conversion to make it legit.

thanks.. bump

its legit both ways and why not go the easier route. obd-2 is just too hard when it comes to smog. you also gotta hook up the data link port so you can hook up a obd-2 scanner

Yea the easiest way is to run the motor as an OBD1 motor. To do it obd2 involves removing the dash for the dash harness change, wiring harness, all the smog stuff, obd2 dist/alt/injectors/IAT/2nd o2 install and everything all wired up to do it that way. If he really wants to do that then that gives you a pretty good idea of what you have to do to do it that way. ONLY REASON i see doing it this way is if he has a Integra Type R swap because to my KNOWLEDGE thats the only way you could pass it legally since theres no obd1 USDM version.

Now the way i would do (for all swaps minus K and type R) is make it obd1 which it is right now since his running the car. If its a B16 get a P30 from a Del Sol, if its a GSR/LS get the ecu from an obd1 version. Smog equipment is really easy just use all the stuff that came with the civic. The BAR isnt as hard as people seem, people just make it alot worse then it actually is.

ding ding ding.. thats it. Weve been toying with the idea of keeping it obd1, putting a Skunk 2 manifold on it, then taking a p30 ECU and putting it in a p72 case to make it run ok, then try to pass it off as a US GSR swap. But you know, thats just a lot of **** and STILL not really being legit. He doesnt plan on doing many mods to the motor at this point.. just wants it semi stock to scoot around.

If he was going to do an underdash wire harness swap, how straight forward is it if we use an EK under dash harness?
I know theres some re-pinning for the cluster but how about all of the other connections like to the fuse box and to the other end of the engine bay harness? and how about harness routing? He rund full ac and everything so would he be able to route the ek harness (or DC) the same way as the eg harness or would things come up short?

You should have just asked "how can you legalize a Type R into obd1 cas" That would have left out the little debate of making it obd1.

I was going to do this for a customers car and i talked with Spade about it and he said to his knowledge everything needs to be obd2 which really sucks. What i tell you is everything i was going to do, some people might have other ways of doing it but this is what i was going to do.

Dash harness: Pull out the hatch one and keep it to the side for parts, pull the fuse box as well and the AC/heater to move around easier. Hoook up the obd2 harness with a obd2 fuse and the scan tool. For the cluster like you mentioned would be a repin to allow for the 92-95 cluster pins. For the heater and AC i was going to keep the 92-95 controls for the owner to do that it was going to be more repinning in order to use the 92-95 parts. The fuse box i believe are basically the same features and wiring so i was going to leave that alone. For the headlights i was just going to tie them into obd2 harness instead of pulling them all the way out.

Engine harness i would have drilled a hole and put a garment so the harness doesnt get snagged anywhere, thats pretty straight forward if you ask me.

Smog equipment you need to get your hands on the obd2 charcoal canister because it has a weird sensor for it.

Best thing you guys could do is get a totalled obd2 car and swap everything over. Another route that i thought of but didnt look to much into, since the owner didnt want it done due to so much work, is the 98-01 integra which i believe is 2 part harness instead of like civics which is 1 part engine harness. I believe those would be a great fit, but like i said i didnt do the research enough to know for sure. Hope that helps.

If it's a jdm itr motor... here's a post that saved my cars life and is the reason I am driving my car to this day

You'll have to tweak the knowledge to your setup of course...
