Default 5th gear went out on freeway

88 accord LXi hatchback.

I was merrily driving around 60mph, when all of a sudden the rpm's started
racing. I imeadeatly downshifted into 4th, and was able to get home doing 60 @ about 3000 rpm's. I tried 5th 2 more times and the rpm's continued to race.

At this point, the car is beyond repair, with major body damage and a plethora of minor problems. I have no intention of fixing this car, but would like to use it for parts in the future maybe, as the engine is in great shape.

a few questions i have is, what caused this problem? I've been reading about synchronizers and whatnot and i'm guessing this seems to be the case, but as of right now, i'm really in a bind. I need to get to work and school. I plan on buying a new car within the week.

Is this safe to drive with just using 1-4th gears? will it leave me stranded any time soon? I work 20 miles away (2am drive time, no traffic, all freeway) and go to school 5 miles past, and drive home 25 with light traffic, and stop/go for 2 miles or so.

haha, if you feel that all your other gears are ok, why not drive it.

but i'd keep a cell phone with someone who'd come pick you up handy just in case.

but i had an auto jetta mk3 and the tranny computer shitted out and i drove around in ONLY 3rd gear haha.

The way I see it, you still got 4 more gears to go through.

But a new car would be fun too...

Lol, I would make the assumption that anything but his car would be fun.
Redlining the thing on the highway in 4th gear might be pretty amuzing though... make your car go out with a bang (not a car accident)

Redlining it in 4th would probably be ~100 mph. (Just guessing, I know nothing about 88 Accords)

I would say that either your syncro is toast or perhaps you broke one of the shift forks.

Hmmm, somebody replaced an axle and didn't bother to top off the trans fluid?
You can replace the 5th gears with out dropping the trans out of the car.
Drain the fluid and get as much metal out as you can with a magnet; then pop off the 'end cap' of the trans.
When you have it off and are looking at the chewed up gears from being low on oil; the shaft on the right, closest to the front bumper is left hand threaded.
The shaft to the left, towards the back bumper, is right hand thread.
