Default question for you ek's out there

hey guys, i have a 96 cx hatch, my gas mileage sux, but i think it may actually be better than i think it is, i go and get gas as soon as it is on the last bar, but when i just filled it up, i filled it with 8.8 gallons, now i just looks in the manual, and it said that my tank takes 11.6 gallons, now thats almost 3 gallons more in the car, which would bring my gas mileage to about normal, but i don't have the guts to run the car past the fuel gauge that says im out of gas! does any1 else have this problem and/or know of way to fix it? i want to know my real gas mileage!!! thanks

At "E" you still have about 1.5 gallons left in your car.

It has to run a bit passed E to run out.

If you're judging gas mileage by your gas gauge, don't.

1) Fill up your gas tank and reset the odometer
2) Drive around until you need to fill up again
3) Fill up the tank again, and divide the total number of miles traveled (number on your odometer) by how many gallons of gas you put in the tank, that will give you your accurate MPG.

Using the gas gauge to calculate MPG is a waste, especially on a 5th gen civic where the gas tanks have that foamy piece of **** thing that always throws off the reading on anything that resembles an incline.

1.fill up full tank 11.6g

2.reset ur odometer(# of miles at time of next fill up)

3.after u fill up again see how many gallons u pump

2/(1-3)=mpg

I have gone 35 miles with the gas light on with my 00 Si. Think of it like a factory precaution to keep you from running out of gas.

This is the only way to determine your true MPG.

If you 1) fill your tank and reset the trip odometer, 2) run it down to wherever you feel comfortable, 3) fill it up all the way and divide the number of miles you've put on the trip odometer by the number of gallons you've put in to fill it up again, you'll end up with a mpg number that has nothing to do with the tank capacity.

As far as crappy mileage goes, get a full tune up (don't forget the air filter) and make sure your O2 sensors are okay (you'll see a check engine light if there's something up). This was the prob with mine and I've talked to a bunch of others that ran into exactly the same prob, which will kill your mileage.

Good luck.

hahaha

1,2&3 are variables

well in this case 1=11.6 the capacity of his gas tank

mileage/(11.6-gallons pumped)=MPG

i understand how to find my mpg, its just that also my fue light doesn't work, i remember i thought this same thing about a year and a half ago, and i just kept running it that same day that it went to the last bar on the gauge, and i went to start the car and it just kept priming and wouldn't start, so its all just iffy, but we will see, thanks guys

i just swapped out my fuel filter today and my car seems to run soooo much better, it doesn't hesitate like it used to, and gas mileage seems to have gone up a bit, but i just filled the tank, so we will see, i could BARELY blow through the old filter, so hopefully this was my problem, caz i have tried everything else with my crappy gas mileage.......ill update you guys when this tank runs out
