Default HONDA Factory OIL good or BAD?

What is the difference between Honda factory oil and aftermarket oil brands?
I have a 06 civic ex (r18 1.8L)
Should I change oil brands or stay with Honda? Any input would HELP.

Provided the oil has API(American petroleum institute) approval and its the correct weight it doesn't really matter what "brand name" it is.

The bottle should have a similar looking seal/star on it if its API approved:

When I go to the dealer for oil changes they use the Honda factory oil, haven't had any problems, but like TRE says it does not really matter

Actually in SOME dealerships they dont even use "HONDA" oil... they buy cheaper drums of oil and use them in the cars in service.

That's EXACTLY why I DON'T go to the dealership for oil changes!

So i guess its better for myself to do it? Any way one could tell if the dealership is ripping one off?

It's more expensive if you do it but I think you'll be better off. Mobil1 synthetic is really good stuff, but is probably twice as much as "honda" oil.

Of course the dealership will recommend THEIR stuff, it's how they make more money, but for little maintenance like oil changes you can go somewhere else or do it yourself.

Hey, thanks man. got good insight. I'll probably take it to a local tuner shop around my area. Once again thanks for the info.

I am an express tech at a dealership. Honda uses mobil one as there oil provider. So when you buy a quart of Honda Oil you are buying mobil one.

None of the ones here use Honda oil or Honda's MTF. For the most part, they all use either Amsoil, Mobil 1 or GM fluid. They don't even wait, they just swap oil upon delivery. No problems so far.

So why are the oil changes so cheap then? 30 bucks for FULL synthetic oil change?

Isn't Mobil1 synthetic like 6 bucks a quart, plus the labor, and filter.??

Comes to around 55-60 bucks at Jiffy Lube.

So i take it the oil used varies from dealer to dealer??

no problem

i was just trying to say that every dealership uses diffrent oil. it would be great if all of them were like yours and used quality oil but some of them would rather save some $

Exxon Mobil manufactures a specific oil blend for Honda Motor Co. but it is NOT a synthetic based oil.

A lot of dealerships will buy cheaper oil that is still API certified and use that during a service. Honestly buying oil in bulk from Napa (or an equivalent store) is MUCH cheaper than buying it directly through a local Honda oil distributor.

Honda doesn't refine its own oil, they use the same oil everyone else is using.
They just slap their Honda logo on the bottle and call it a day.

And you better believe on top of that fact also, that the oil Honda uses is engineered to properly lubricate the motors they put the oil in.

A few dealerships around here even have huge castrol banners hanging from their service center signs.

Jiffy lube is supposedly the best you can get for your car. Drop your car off at jiffy lube and you're set.

I have heard that jiffy lube uses recycled oil. Is that True?
