Default Question about 92' CX transmission...

I'm looking to convert my automatic 98 Civic EX to manual as my next mod. A local guy on a local forum offered me a tranny out of a 92' CX for 50 bucks. I'm guessing that it would be bad to put a 92' CX tranny in my car, but I was just wondering if there is any way in hell that this could actually work out for me. If everything was in good condition, would he CX tranny even match up right to my car? I thought all the D series were interchangeable...

save yourself some trouble by using only 92-00 hydro d series trannies. u can convert to cable old fashion way or with a kit, but since u gotta switch all the components out anyway might as well go hydro.

the 92 cx tranny will work just find with correct mounts, hardware, etc. but..those gears suck ***.. 92-95 cx and vx trannies, and 96-00 cx dx trannies all suck. the 92-95 dx tranny sucks too but is up next on the food chain. what u want is a 92-95 ex/si sohc vtec tranny or a 96-00 ex sohc vtec tranny if u can find it. i wouldnt go lower then the 92-95 dx though.

the cx will get u going with your stick conversion tho. research what parts u need. i think one of the major things u gotta do is weld a new bracket on the frame for the manual tranny mount. http://www.hybrid-honda-perf.org has some info on the tranny swap in the articles/archives section.

thanks for the pointers...does it make a difference that I'll be building up my engine and then adding turbo? Some people say that it's better to have wider gears for turbo...that way shifts don't come so fast...?

well maybe if u had gears like a b16a..but for single cam turbo.. si/.ex gears r fine dude. that long gear theory **** is for trannies like the b16a..where on higher** boost levels the tranny is a bit to quick. in this case people go gsr or ls. for the shorter gears. but even in this case i know plenty of people with shorter gears like the b16a on the street running boost fine.

single cam gears suck period(with exceptions like the zc, aftermarket gearing, final drives, and hybrid trannies). so just stick with the ex/si set up.
