Default 1990 honda Accord Engine knock

What is usually the cause of engine knocking. When I Drive my 1990 honda accord up hills I get a "knocking." Sounds like a spray paint can rattle. Any ideas.

well, if it's the engine... There's a pretty good chance your engine is dieing. Does it burn much oil?

are you saying the motor was seized and wouldn't turn over or that the car just sat for a while not being turned over.

Is it more of a knock or ticking?

When I think of a "knock" sound, I wouldn't compare it to the sound of a spray can.

Yeah, it depends on the sound. If you could record it maybe that could help. If it's a loud noise you can easily hear from the car cabin and it sounds like one part causing it, it could be serious. If it's more of a ticking from the valves or fuel injectors, which usually isn't as loud, it could be repairable. Do a valve adjustment or do some diagnostics on the fuel injectors..

I had kind of the same problem on my 91. Does it only make the noise when you are going up hill or accelerating? That's when mine would make the noise, it turned out to be that the bolt for the crank pulley had come loose and the pulley was rattling. I would check that, it ended up costing me a new crank cause it chewed up the end of the crank and snapped the bolt off in the hole!!! It's easy to check, just take the driver's side tire off and there is a plastic shroud attached to the fender. Once the shroud is off you can easily check the bolt. I think it should be tourqed somewhere around 150ft lbs.

I will have to check that. That's exactly what it does, it only happens when I am accelerating and going up hills. If it were a major problem wouldnt it be "knocking" all the time. I will have to check that. Thank you.

I have the same problem with my 99 accord 4cyl, but it is more of a rattling. Sounds like something repeatedly hitting the hood. You can only hear it from inside the car and only when idling. If it happens when idling if you hit the gas at all it will stop, but start again when it is released. It also doesn't do it all the time, maybe once a month, if that. Any ideas.

Mine will only do it when I accelerate and go up hills it's not all the time but pretty often. It's more of a rattling. I will have to check the above suggestions.
