Simple shorter gears vs longer gears, do the math out they have B series tranny calcs on the net or you can crunch your own #s.

You can then see how your top speed in each gear will be effected also how each gear sits.

Frankly, a b16 tranny with an ls is a great little setup if you are willing to turn a few more RPM here or there.

Not just the gearing itself but the FD is factored in when you change trannies.

Most people will blinding say go for it, as it really will waken the motor up even if you do 500 miles a week all highway.

It's one of those things for speed hands down go do it now. For a daily might want to think but still most people will support it.

The LS 5th gear will help cut down the free way RPM, but it'll not be same as an LS 5th due to the FD change.

Long story short, do it

That the setup I'm putting together...B16 S1 cable / B18A1/ JG head. With all the low end torque the LS has, you're supposed to be very hot off the line, although the VTEC's will get you with the high end rpms...
Hell of a fun around town combination. The LS fifth does help keep rpms more reasonable at hwy speeds, better mileage...

I would be prone to telling you to put in the b16 3rd, 4th and a gsr 5th.
You wont be disappointed. The gsr/ls second gear is great as it gets the
rpms out closer to third so when you throw it, the rpms stay up. Its really
great for accleration. If you get the b16 tranny find one with a decent
diff. Is your LS a 4.4 FD? I have a 4.4 ring gear and GSR diff which is
still open but much stronger than ls/b16 if you are interested PM

if its daily driven ill go with the stock tranny or gsr. but if imma drive my car around and try to race random cars then the b16 tranny. like one of the guys sed before, the b16 tranny will be great from launch, you'll jus rev faster and have better tq (in the beggining).

i had a b16 tranny on my ls motor in one of my cars and it was by far one of my favorite setups. i never put in an LS 5th gear though, and with all the highway driving I do I should, but on straights on track I will hit 5th and I definitely dont want to bog down so much

I've got a B16 tranny with an LS 5th gear on my B18c and its great. I roll on to the freeway, put it in 5th and cruise.
My brother has a B20 with a gsr tranny and its seems like a match made in heaven. The B20 has the torque to close the gap between 1st and 2nd gear. Its so much more fun to drive now.
