Default 3rd gear grind

today me and my dad went to look at a 99 GSR w/ 109,xxx miles. The owner said around 6k rpm third gear grinds, and it burns about a quart of oil every 3k miles. but he changes the oil every 2500-3000 miles with mobil 1 synthetic oil. I believe i can get it for $7k is it worth it?

here's the car; http://www.vadriven.com/forums...70073

I think thats a good price. Maybe change to a 10w30 and it wont burn oil. Thats what I did and it definitely helped. I was runnig 5w30 before.

Hmm ok then. Well you could try a non-synthetic for 1 oil change and see if that makes a difference. That happens sometimes when the engine hasnt broken in properly because of the use of synthetic since new. My buddies 00 Si did that. He switched to non-synthetic and it stopped using oil.

he's the 3rd owner and im pretty sure full synthetic wasn't used for the whole engines life. What about the 3rd gear grind?

run your finger on the inside of the exhaust tip and if it is oily walk away from the car. ashy is ok, but clean is best.

3rd Gear grind is a common problem with the trannies. ANYTHING that burns oil is a gamble. My advice would be to stay away

3rd gear grind can be fixed with GM sychromesh fluid, its not a perminent fix but a temporary solution for a long time.
this stuff does wonders
save 3 of my tranny's from the notorious 3rd gear grind.
