do i just unbolt the top half and remove the plate? if so do i need to replace it with another gasket or what have you guys done instead of the gasket

is there any bad things that can happen by removing the plate?

Removing it is pointless. You just loose low-end power....search.

You will likely have to pry the plate up if it has never been taken off before. Just use a flathead. I used hondabond to reseal it since i fubar'd the gasket.

You will have to remove the studs and replace the studs with properly lengthed bolts.

when your boosted you want a larger plenum size in the intake, instead of taking out the plate just remove the butterfly valves and the rod and plug up the holes. or get with blacktrax and get their replacement plate.

the IAB plate is technically part of the runners, not of the plenum.

a new oem gasket is like $7, just be sure to scrape the old one off completely

ah but wouldn't just removing the plate reduce the volume

most of the FI IM's i have seen use short runners and large plenums so technically i guess it would be helping your situation.

I'm still working on getting some kind of analysis on whether it helps NA.

so would is it just a 'give and take' with taking out the whole plate instead of just removing the butterfly vavles?

Here's the only pic I have right now...hope that gives you some idea. There's 4 butterflies and 4 runners inside this plate.

For a turbo car you would want SHORT FAT runners. With a turbo your only concern is air flow capacity. For instance...

A manifold like the one about would be perfect for a turbo application. There is less distance for the pressurized air to go thru. This is made by edelbrock for turbo cars. Now a manifold like this one...

Also made by edelbrock is geared more towards N/A builds with long narrower runners. For NA cars you need flow velocity and thus longer narrower runners. Moral of the story if your going turbo, the shorter & fatter the runners the better.

those manifolds are for different cars. b18c vs a d16y8
you cannot compare those manifolds

I know that, it was just a general statement about IM design.

removing the butterfly plate will reducing throttle response since you are decreasing the volume of air in the IM. For racing app its fine since your usually @ WOT but for a DD its best you leave them there for low end torque. Unless its a race vehicle you will not benefit. Its all about volume.

wouldnt less volume = faster response since the air is able to travel from the plenum to the combustion chamber in a shorter distance?

i have noticed absolutely no bad effects of removing my plate, that i can feel.

lol read what you said.... long shorter....lol

fastwanabe, don't pretend to know anything about airflow dynamics, please, just keep your (wrong) theories to yourself from now on I'm sick of people making up some BS about what they think modifying a manifold does when they really have no idea.
