Do I have to run premium?
use 89-91 octane when running b16a motors, you'll get most complete burn.....higher octane is not necessary or recommended if the mods are not intensive or knock sensor is running
you can also retard the timing to further run lower octane....
its possible to run B16a with 87 octane without any problems, on a stock ECU and timing

car&driver recently had a story on there being NO advantage to a higher octane.
i don't agree.
i assume they don't have oil companies as their sponsers

probably because I'm pretty sure the B-series VTEC motors all have knock sensors. You shouldn't hear any detonation if you use lower octane, but the computer will retard timing and reduce performance. Engines w/ compression of 10.0:1 or higher should use at least 91 octane, otherwise detonation or worse could occur.

your car will have the highest performance with the lowest octane fuel possible (before detonation.) higher octane=SLOWER BURNING.
regarding the b16a.. use what honda recommends... 91

Dude, always go by what the manufacturer/Honda recommends in the manual. On the gas can of 1999-2000 SI/SiRs it say PREMIUM FUEL ONLY. As mentioned with a high compression motor, you should use PREMIUM fuel. If you don't your car will not perform as well. (retard timing, etc.) Also chance of detonation. The way I see it is, treat your car as best you can. We don't have big gas-guzzling V8s with big tanks. We have 11.9 gallon tanks. I use Sunoco Ultra 94 exclusively, and the car runs very well. Don't be cheap...
