Default So what does "B18C5" mean anyways?

i hope this isnt a dumb question, but i've often wondered what exactly each engine code means. is there a chart or something? as far as i know, the first letter is the block, the two digit number is the displacement (ie 1.8L for 18?) and after that i'm lost. or is the rest just random? like the C5 etc... its just something i feel like i should know about hondas know but i dont.

thankyou

B: 'it comes from a B-series engine'
18: 'it has a displacement of 1.8L'
C: 'more engine-specific info' I'm not sure if this is actually descriptive...
5: 'it's the Type R'

Those last two letters don't mean much, since the Civic Type R is B16B, etc...

pretty much,
b - engine family
18 - displacement
c1 - revision of that engine (a, b, c1, c5, etc...)

but the zc motor doesn't seem to follow this, but its technically a d-series dohc

hope this helps some

you should have posted that in the ITR forum. the rest of this site isn't special enough for ITR topics.

Not correct entirely.
The a/b and c lines are not related.

well, the way I see it - the b18b1 + b18c1 were kinda similar, almost the same block - their diffrerence was mainly the oil squirters, block girdle and the position of the dowel pins, as well as rods + pistons, etc... so its kinda like honda took the ls motor and made something better than it (gsr motor). Better example of what I'm sayin: b20a (prelude) and b20b, b20z - all are 2.0l honda motors, but the 1st version sucked, the b20b was like a revised (newer design 2.0l) and the z raised the compression, etc..

hope that makes some sense.
