Blox Type A's or CTR's for my mild b18c1 build? want to be able to pass smog here in Cali
sup guys, im kinda new to engine buliding. I want to do cams, but i live in cali..... so im deciding on a mild cam right now like the ctr or blox type a, something that will allow me to pass smog (hopefully). Right now, my setup is:
97 b18c1
usdm itr pistons
aem cai
jdm itr 4-1 header
omni test pipe
itr catback (2.36 in)
Compression is at 10.8 right now, i might get a mugen headgasket which will bump my compression up to about 11.3. Do you think 11.3 compression will fail me when I smog? And has anyone had a similar setup that has passed smog in cali? what cams did you use? thanks for your input.

im kind of leaning towards the blox type a's because i hear they are a little more aggressive than the ctr cams, and they are cheaper than the ctr's. Has anyone used the blox a's before? what do you think about them?
and also, would it be unecessary to bump the 10.8cr to 11.3cr if im running the ctr or blox a?
I have blox A's. Yes, they are better then ctrs. My motor made 144 whp with stock cams. With the A's it made 160 with tuning. A bump in compression is not necessary. You should pass smog, because the primaries are the same as type r's.
Next time use the SEARCH function, thanks. All this info has already been posted and discussed on h-t.

Please don't make fun of me
, I feel blessed not to have smog where I live but do they do the test's off idle??

Yeah, its sucks, they test idle, and high rpm. I usually have a hard time passing the idle portion of the test. My No2 was 63 at idle and 63 was the limit for my car.
Never have a problem with high rpm though. Any ideas why not.

you shouldn't worry about what cams you'd be running, with running a test pipe you wont pass no matter what type of cams you ran

oh, ill be putting on my oem cat for sure when i go in to test. oh yeah, im running the jdm itr header with 2.5 inch collector, i know my oem cat wont fit that so i was considering buying the jdm 2.5 inch cat. Do you guys know if that will work okay when i go in to smog, or should i just take off the header and bolt on my oem header with oem cat?

you wouldn't need a jdm cat just because you have a jdm header. you just need one with 2.6 inlets. they dont even run cats in japan. carsound cat would work fine.

when do you have to smogg ur car, your best bet is to leave ur car stock lookin do ur smog then after u pass smog then put ur goodies in.as long you have ur stock ecu p72 ,stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifold you should be fine.
what if i ran BCIII's and put my oem header n cat back on, would i still pass smog with those? im going to have to smog this september. and do high flow cats pass smog over here in cali?

hey you have two opinions. if you have bc3 oem header, stock airbox and a stock cat and right ecu p72 to ur car you should pass with flyin colors,or you could spend money on a illegal smog like payin 300 dollars to past smog. r u obd1 or obd2 integra. if you have adjustable cam gears set them at 0

Yes. That's what I have on right now. Its what I used when I passed to certify my gsr swapped hatch.

Im obd2, and i got the usdm p72 ecu so i should be good there. Ill also make sure my cams are set to 0,0.

thats awesome to know. i searched a bunch on high flow cats, all the posts were about fitment, and none had to do with if they pass smog in cali. thanks for the info, i was really looking for it.

The only thing about the cat is you have to make sure its nice and hot. Run the car for at least 20-30 minutes before testing. Try to make sure there's as little time between you getting there and the actual test. I failed the first run by just a little. The tech was cool enough to run my car for a little while before retesting and rev'd it up to get hotter. Passed the second time.

very cool info. much appreciated. I wouldnt want to build up my car just to have it fail smog. I guess some people settle for the "smog hookup" but what if u get a test only u know? then what do u do.
