Default temp guage acting up

after my swap EK DX to B16A2 I have had a temp guage issue. I did not change the cluster and it worked fine before. The guage takes forever to move, it only moves when the car is at idle with no airflow. Once it starts to move to normal(middle of the guage) and I start to drive it it starts to drop below the C line. I have not heard or seen the fan kick on either, but temp has been 50's average so that might be the cause of the fan. My thoughts are either thermostat or temp sensor.

It the temp sensor located under the distributor one wire sensor?

Thermostat location?

I would replace the temp sender first - nice and cheap and go from there - I had similar prob and that fixed it

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.

The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing in the rear of the engine on the transmission side. It is part #3 shown here:

I recommend using only OEM Honda thermostats. It will cost you a little over $16. Part number is 19301-P08-316.

Those pictures are straight from the Honda parts catalog, which is hosted by several online Honda parts retailers.

Most likely I will be replacing the sender because it looks a bit easier to repalce.

Different problem but still radiator related, I now can't get the radiator to stop leaking. I got a LS upper radiator hose and seems to be a bit larger diameter and I can't get it to tighten up enough to stop leaking. I am using the adjustable band type.

Well good news is that I know it has to do with the t-stat because the old was stuck open. The bad news is that I must be retartded because I have tried two new ones and each time they don't open up. I know this because the lower radiator hose is cold, the fan doesn't kit on and the temp guage doesn't stop rising until I drive it for airflow. I positioned the gasket and the bypass thing on the t-stat as the old one was but for some reason they won't open. I got the t-stats for a 99 Si and they are slightly different than the JDM b16a2 that came with the car. right now I don't have any t-stat in there and it works fine, but I would really like to figure this out.

Well I finally got the thing fixed!!!!!!!!!!

The t-stat replaced along with bleeding the coolant system which I have never heard of. This only took about 1 hour, let some air out, let it cool, put some more coolant in, let air out until constant flow of coolant.

Sounds like the same prob I had. I would get a new t-stat ($11.00) at autozone. Get some coolant and the o-ring. Two bolts holds the housing on. Make sure when you replace it to put the o-ring and t-stat postioned exactly as the original one was. Fill up the radiator put cap on and open the bleeder (b16 is above the T-stat) start your car and let it warm up. While the bleeder is open air and coolant will come out, eventually jsut air will come out. Turn the car off let it cool until you can open the rad. cap, fill it up more and start the cycle over till straight coolant comes out and close it. This is similar to bleeding a brake system. Have fun!

bum to find out a dumb answer... i put the t stat in and the temp is normal. heres my question, should the lower coolant line have pressure in it because when i squeeze it i dont feel anything... just want to make sure i did it right so i dotn end up with a blown head gasket... temp is normal and car is running better then normal but just worried thanks in advance

who cares, the car wont overheat unless you run it dry on coolant or take a dump on the water jackets. Ive been goin without one of those for 2 years.

ya i have the same problem. changed the thermostat and temp sensor and still no read on the guage. i recently changed the radiator as well due to a leak and even still no read on the temp guage(even tho i didnt really expect it to anyways). my guess is just a bad wire or somethin. not that big of a deal, i kno my car is warm and as long as i keep an eye on coolant, all should be good.

not sure why the guage won't work, must be electrical.
