what exactly are you clear coating?!
Depending on what you are working with, the clear may not "stick" to the surface without a good sanding..... that means.... clear coat on top of a scratched aluminum surface.

well if you can rough up the surface(80-220 grit) you can use a matte trim and jamb clear. That's a 1K type of clear coat, costs about 15-20 dollars a can.
If you know of a DuPont jobber near you, get a can of A-7460S, little more expensive than some products, but its worth the extra money.
