exact same problem with my itr, but the antenna is stuck permanently up, and you hear the motor wining. i'm gonna try and disconnect the antenna motor and just have it permanently down. im thinking i'll still catch stations like that.

Before you replace it, just push it down all the way. It sounds and feels bad when you do it. Then turn the radio on and pull on it to help it go up all the way. When it's up lube it with something thicker than WD-40. Then turn the radio off and push it down all the way.
Repeat that a few times and you MIGHT have solved your problem. I did that this year with this car and it worked very well.

Mine quit on me years ago. I bought a new mast, but I think it was something with the gear. I ended up buy a black replacement antenna from Crutchfield. Cost was only $10 - $12. I didn't feel like forking over money for a motorized antenna.
FWIW when mine did it to me I would push it back down and let it come back up again, when it was at full staff, lol I would WD40 it and it was good. Try it, it's cheaper than a new gear
I suspect this is due to driving in cold weather. Try defrosting it with a hair dryer. If that doesn't work
And as B18C5 mentioned push it down all the way though it sounds really bad. do it..
Then go to your auto parts store and fine some dry graphite grease. with a cloth apply it heavily. Try the antenna once more.
If you want to eliminate this once and for all you can replace to a fixed antenna or don't raise your antenna on cold days.

Besides removing the interior plastic, easy.

New mast. Just remember that 90% of the time the plastic cord breaks off in the motor so you need to disassemble it and remove the piece.
