Timing belt broke while starting car??
2000 Civic CX hatch. 92,000 miles on completely stock motor.
Went out early in the morning (it was around 29 degrees out).
Turned the key, car sounded like it turned over normally. Then it shuddered lightly..
Then turned over very easily. Later that day when it warmed up, I tried turning it over again. Same thing, rapid turnover with no sign of compression or attempting to start.
I assume it was the timing belt that failed? What are the odds that it DIDN'T damage valves considering the car wasn't even running at the time?

Your odds are actually pretty good that it did not do significant damage since it wasnt running and you werent at a high RPM.
However, until you diagnose it as the timing belt for sure, and/or replace it....I'm sure you know this but PLEASE do not attempt to start the car again. Again, you may know this already...but if you keep trying to start it you can cause further damage. Good luck man!

when it shuddered shouldn’t you have checked under the hood?
as for assuming anything if you do not already pull the cover off and check the timing belt and let us all know the results
