Default coil problem???

I have an 89 CRX with a D15 and would like to know if it is common for the coil to have black stuff in the hole where the pin in the distributor goes. I would assume this is carbon. I have been experiencing problems shutting off while driving and it got progressively worse to the point the car would not restart after shutting off. I replaced the coil, it ran fine for a while but has started shutting off on me again. This is when I pulled the dist. cap and discovered the black in the coil. I cleaned it out and will see how it runs tomorrow. Has anyone had this problem and what is the cure if it is a problem? I have tried adifferent main relay and it didn't help.
