i would like to make my dash and instrament lights look like these.

does anyone have the picture to how the bulbs in each of these look so i can buy the right ones for them??

 

i did mine with blue LEDs and i assume you could do the same with red LEDs

Doing the cluster is easy as hell. The climate control is possibly one of the most difficult things to do.

Yes.

I bent the cable for the temperature control when I did mine, I have yet to straighten it out.

Though as it sits now because of the bend in the cable about 1-2cm from the right is "full" hot - obviously it can't pull all the way out for "full" cold. .

It'll straighten I think with a pair of needle-nose pliars, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

It really isn't, there's 3 screws that hold the bezel on, then 4 (in a rectangle pattern) that hold the cluster in.

Then the cluster just unplugs, the bulbs are on the back of the cluster.

The temp control is the only tricky part. You can figure it out once you have it out, but getting it out can be a bit tricky - only because the one plug dead-center on the top is a bitch to get to. Only thing I could recommend is what I did which was use a micro-screw driver to push the pin down while I used a kelly clamp to pull the plug out.

Anybody have any tips for straightening the temperature adjuster cable?

I figure i can do it with a pair of needle-nose, but I still can't get the right angle on it .

Any suggestions there? I had to bend it to remove it, that's why it's bent . Doesn't allow my temp to go all the way over to the coldest b/c it's about 1-2cm offset of the hot side.

i tried the bulb covers and they were ok.. but the LED light is way more clean imo... it IS more of a hassle.. but i prefer the results i recieved with them..

Just buy the red bulbs from autolumination.com for like 10 bucks for the whole set...that's what I did, worked perfectly.

They're $.99 a piece and you need I believe 2 #74's, and 5 #24's (which are also $.99 a piece).

It's not an expensive project.

Just scroll down, the regular old bulbs.

Such as:

You don't need the twist lock bases, get the wedge ones (ones in the pic).


PS:

My friend did the same to his tercel - 'cept with green (teal exterior). My other friend put blue's in his g/f's EJ8 b/c she liked the way the VW dashes lit up.

It's up to you. I never stuck around to see how the blue's turned out but we took a ride down to NJ during the day, slept at her mom's house, and the car was gone the next day ( to NJ) - so I never got to see how the blue bulbs looked .

This should have been a 1 or 2 post answer thread and that should have been it, then it shoulda went away. Just didn't happen like that this time. I mean putting amber bulbs in isn't exactly an act of congress.

when you put in the leds did it effect the ability for you to use the dimmer switch to tone the light down or up??

nope it works fine

i left the two top lights stock (the ones that illuminate the needles) so that they stayed nice and white.. it created a good contrast between the blue gauges and the white needles..

but yeah dimmer works fine..

Looks good, ive been wanting to do this for awhile. Looked for kits and such but couldnt find the ones for my cluster, but since all u do is change and wire da bulbs, looks pretty easy. thanks for da links and tips.
