i own a 89 si hatchback, and there is a whining/howling noise coming from the back end of my car when i drive. anyone know what it is, or can be? my dad thought it was a wheel bearing, but i was wondering if anyone knows. thanks.

where specifically....is it coming from exhaust area, or wheels, or fuel pump area??? where where

no such thing as wheel bearing in the rear...at least from what YOU said, only bearings are in the front

i believe it is coming from the tire/wheel area. it only makes the noise when i am actually driving/rolling in my car.

probably rear brakes, im not positive, do u have discs or drums?
i think 89 si came with drums, could be wrong though.
how loud is it and what kind of noise??

i have the stock rear drums on my car. it is a whirring sound, almost sounds like tire noise, but it isnt. kinda odd to explain the sound.

maby there is a squirel that has his tail stuck up in there?
do your brakes work right? i have seen springs bust and rub but you would notice a difference in the pedal.

see if you can isolate it to a certain side, most likely a bad wheel bearing
