The maximum EPA fine is $2500, and individual states may impose their own additional fines.

That's quite possible. I wasn't able to locate information on specific state fines, but the EPA web site indicates that the maximum federal fine for an individual is $2500 per violation.

well i dont have a dyno or anything but i always go by what my grandpop taught me about cars and that is the faster the air goes in and out of your motor .. the faster you go ... so u figure all that stuff in there is holding back the exaust. so its not gettin out as fast as its goin in... iunno it might sound stupid but what do u have to lose?

even if you do get caught w/o a cat, wouldn't it just turn into a fix-it ticket and be only $10?

Agreed! I'm not a tree hugger, but the power improvement, if any, isn't worth the damage done to the environment and the possible fine you'd get from Johny Law.

People breaking these emissions laws are what makes them even more strict than they already are.

The shape and size of a catalytic hasn't changed much since the cops were kids, and they know what to look for.
