made a gauge pod for my eg
I think it looks pretty good appearance wise. I would be a little worried about using that much bondo especially where it gets hot near the dash like that. I would be worried about cracks. Bondo is really not meant to be used more than a think skin coat really and it looks pretty thick but I didn't see what is underneath it so it may not be as thick as I think it is. I wouldn't want to use more than 1/16" thick skim coat of bondo but I know in a lot of car audio apps guys get crazy with the bondo. One idea for future projects is to use PU (Polyurethane) foam and sculpt that to shape, its easy to work and you can get a pretty accurate shape in high density foam and works with most resins. From there you could glass over it with very light weight fiberglass fabric and resin and then paint. Just some ideas but good first effort there. If it lasts forever I'll eat my words
thanks for the future help the bondo isnt that thick theres a little more there than a 1/16 but i hope it last for a while i. blocked of the heat coming thought the heater box (like autometer does with there vent gauge pods) it was my first project like this this hope to do one for my avcr next .
Looks pretty good in the finished state. That's a different approach than I have done, using foam and fiberglass, but I honestly don't think that your bondo is going to create an issue. I think it'll hold up just fine honestly.
Only thing I really don't care for is the finish color you used. I think a more flat trim style paint would give it a more finished OEM look.
Very good effort and result...I'm sure your proud of it.

Looks good, I made a similiar one for mine but never took pics. BONDO sucks, its probably the worst BODY FILLER out there. You will not have any issues with the body filler on something like that. Where you have issues are people applying 1/4+ to car panels that flex some and over time it will crack. As long as you sanded the fiberglass with at least 80 grit or rougher sandpaper your golden
just a FYI also there are different types of fillers...something like Evercoats Rage (what I use) I try to keep under 1/8th inch. I have seen people use up to 1/4'' or a little bigger for years with no issues... but these of course are on body panels. Something like Evercoats Metal Glaze is something that is a thin coat applied to smooth out any pin holes in the body filler...thats probably what you want to keep under 1/16th inch

</TD></TR></TABLE>You info on bondo is wrong.......Bondo(rage gold best there is imo)is a FILLER which means it is used to FILL DENTS.The thinner the better but u can make it up to 1/2" thick no problem..Flow filler or polyester is meant to be more than a 1/8" thick......Nice pod

So its yours.... ITS NOT BONDO god damnit. This is Bondo
.
Its a bodyfiller, like everything else. Evercoat is a bodyfiller, its called evercoat and is a bodyfiller....its not bondo. Why does everyone call any kind of body filler bondo? (sorry, i get pissed when i hear bondo, my professors want to smack anyone when the term "bondo" is used to describe body filler)

You would fill a half inch dent in a door panel with any filler? That's insane, a good bodyman would never do that. How am I wrong here? How do you think Bondo got its bad rep, people using it to fill kicked in doors. Half an inch is a lot! Why would the body shop pull a dent if they could fill it and get good results. I worked for a high end body shop for a few years and there's no way that type of crap would fly. Of course you can do it but should you is the question. My words were cautionary he can do what he wants.

Pretty cool isn't it? You can see the gauges easily and doesn't look ricey and tacked on. I did it the exact same way back i the day. Shitty pic to see...

Oh and to whoever said you can use 1/2" of filler, that's obsurd. Hell, I feel bad about SKIMMING a spot. I usually do a skim coat over a panel, but 98% comes right back off onto the floor. It's used to get things PEFECTLY straight IF used correctly.

I never in my post said to fix a dent in a car with filler at 1/2"(please reread my post)IT is useable up to 1/2"....I always remove as much of the dent as possiable before any filler is used.I have worked at highend shops for over 7 years and if a new guy tried that **** on a car he would be gone.
