i think i already know what the answer is to this but i wanted peoples experiences to back it up.
i have a knocking noise, i have not been able to isolate it but it goes away after the car warms up. i do hear clacking from the valves when i do the screwdriver end up to the ear trick but i have a nagging suspicion that i may have a rod bearing clacking. if so, has anyone had the experience of just dropping the pan and throwing new rod bearings in or will the crank usually be too chewed up? i got a stethoscope today and i am letting the car cool down to check it as i write this. i am not afraid of dropping an engine in it but i live in new york and there is really no place to do it on your own unless you are wealthy enough to afford a garage space. i hate to pay a few hundred in labor to someone to do something i could do easily given the equipment.
oh yeah, it is a 91 crx dx with the stock d15b2

Well you have to drop the tranny. Its not worth it in my opinion. I rather drop the engine and do it outside but since you have limited space maybe it mi ght work for you. Just have a second set of hands.
Remove tranny, crank pulley, oil pump, rear main seal and the oil pan and you should be able to get to it.
Have fun and good luck!
