Default ECU question

Hey guys, I'm still new to this site and all this car stuff but I love it. I hear a lot of talk about ECU's. I know that that is the cars computer but everyone is getting different ones. why is that? does it improve the vehicle?

people convert from obd2 to obd1 so they can chip the ecu's and tune them to correctly run the engine. read this: http://www.phearable.net/tech/....html

yea...and also, if you do a swap on your car...like a SOHC to a DOHC or something, you gonna want to run the proper ECU for the motor...
