small 1000w amp
As the name states im looking for a small true 1000w amp. The sub i have is dual 4 ohm voice coil 12" alpine type x which is 1000w RMS. currently i have a 1600w MA audio amp and the sucker is HUGE. in a couple of weeks i will be building a 1³ sealed box, or around that size and i need a smaller amp. i was looking at the JL audio 1000/1 but that still isnt very small. i dont much care about the price, im not looking to go much more expensive than i can pick up a jl amp for tho. any sugestions would be helpful. thanks!
Edit: i need 1000W @ 2ohms

What do you guys think of this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...QrdZ1
Alpine PDX-1.1000 - gotta be the smallest 1000W amp on the market that actually sounds good and hits its number....
It's basically the size of a ream of paper - 2" or so thick by 8 x 11 - insanely small.

true, but its the same depth, taller, and slightly less long as the amp i posted, but you pay an extra $200 or so. same power output. but i will say that it is sweet looking

It's about 75% of the size of the one you posted
The PDX is 3" smaller in one direction, 1" smaller in the other, and only 1/8" taller...but I could understand if you don't want to swallow the extra cost.
You said small

This is what I was thinking also. Pretty sweet amp IMO. They do an impressive job of tracking power. This is a Digital amp with a trick to keep wasted power in check.
I'm not sure you will find much smaller.

With their new line (they added the 4.100 and 1.600) it's going to be hard to pass these up as system amplifiers...

Is the 4x100 a class D?
A lot of amp waste a lot of energy into the heatsink. Wouldn't mind taking one apart. Here is how I believe they work (I could be entirely wrong).
Most amps use a 30V rail. Think of say half of a 30hz sinewave going from 0 to 30V. Now at as the voltage drops from 30 to 0 the extra voltage has to go somewhere. In most amps this gets dumped into the heatsink (30-V)/R equals the current (heat) dumped into the heatsink.
Now a class D amplifier improves efficientcy by chopping the sinewave up into pieces so the transistor is not "on" all the time.
Now here is the part I am not sure on but I suspect this amp does some rail scaling. So now the rail voltage is only slightly above the needed output at all times. So this time you get ((v+6)-v)/R current (heat) dumped into the heatsink as wasted energy. Pretty slick trick IMO. Unsure on how this effects sound quality though.
probably more then you wanted to know but you asked
If you dont understand ask a question and I'll try to answer.

im fairly electronic literate, and it sounds like very interesting technology, but for a mono sub amp, would it really matter the sq? i mean, im sure for that price that it is not going to sound like garbage.
Well that is a pretty good amp, and it will give you 1x1000W RMS into 2 ohms, [05 model] but I have to agree with rcurley55, [and we hardly ever do] the PDX-1.1000 is a very good amp, and I know of no smaller "true" 1000W amp... http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-e...tab=F you can compare the two... http://mobile.jlaudio.com/prod...d=221

Class D amps generally sound like garbage and that is why they are sub only amplifiers.
This is a new twist to the class D technology. Price does not always mean better.
This amp is pretty slick but I have not done any lengthy audio testing.

ive got an amp for sale, its an arc audio xxk1500 900x1 at 4ohm bridged, 1000x1 at 2ohms bridged. its 15x8"
heres some info: http://www.arcaudio.com/arc-05...0.htm
its a bit higher end than the alpine. I wanted $375 shipped for it if youre interested. I dont have the birth sheet, but arc amps are underrated by about 10% so youre lookin at around 1k at 4ohm and around 1100 at 2. If youre unfamiliar with arc audio, do a little research, they are quality products with awesome SQ

hahaha, mark the date!

thats what i meant. seeing as its a sub amp, you dont have to have the most clear symbol as long at the power is there. i mean as apposed to for your main speaker amp
Having heard the pdx series amps used in many vehicles, I am not a fan. I think they sound very poor for the price you pay.
That being said, I know of no other amp that can deliever that much output in such a small package

my current amp is rather large, something on the order of 22X12X2.8, so the decklid is out of the question, and as for the 1 cubic foot box, the whole point to make it that small is to have minimal impact on trunk space, ive done the whole huge multi kilowatt systems that take up the whole trunk and now i just want a nice amp to power my sub that i love...and as far as mounting it on the back of the seat i have tried that and it is too big. i need to be able to put skiis and ski equipment in my trunk. so im thinking about building a false floor, and mounting the amp to the floor of the trunk and raising the floor about 3 inches.
