Default proper way to check auto tranny fluid

what is the right way to check the fluid on a hondamatic auto tranny from a 91 Civic?

I overfilled the tranny by 3/4 of a liter and drove about 100km's. No slipping or anything and no hard driving but I want to know if I damaged anything.

The fluid level is still above the hash marks on the dipstick after driving 100km's on the highway.

What is the proper way to check the fluid levels.

Thanks

Don't you want the car running when you check auto trannies fluid level.
Most of them are that way......Right.

I haven't had a honda auto so don't flame me.
