Default Building a Daily 400whp B16?

I'm in the process of swapping in a B16A2 out of a 99-00 Civic Si into my '96 DX. I also want to turbo the engine. I don't want to tear it down to the block but I am willing to have head work done. I was figuring this for a setup:

T4(no idea what size, something that has good street characteristics and makes great pwoer)
Lovefab Topmount
Tial BOV
Tial F38 or F41 WG
3" Cold Side & Hot Side Intercooler Piping
70mm TB
Skunk2 Intake Mani
Spearco Intercooler
Skunk2 Titanium Retainers
Skunk2 Valves(Maybe oversized?)
Skunk2 Valvesprings
Skunk2 Camgears
GSR Cams
Hondata S200B
Golden Eagle Fuel Rails w/ DSM 450s

I think that pretty well covers everything. Would this setup get me around 400whp or am I going to have to dive into the block. I really don't want to do that now(leaving for the Air Force in August/September) and I just want to get my car boosted and then when I'm done with AIT I'll have my engine rebuilt by Stewart Racing Engines.

T4 is way too big unless you like lag and only 6000-8000rpm powerband.

GT30R or t3/t4 57 trim will hit your 400whp easily.

You don't need sleeves but it wouldn't hurt. Seems 400-450whp is around the limit for stock sleeves. Yes some people push much further, but you want this motor to last don't you?

3" intercooler piping is way overkill, it just makes it harder to route the piping behind the bumper and stuff, 2.5 will be fine. I run 2.25 and I have 400whp.

Personally, I think the 70MM throttle body is a waste of time too, you'll hit your horsepower mark with the OEM throttle body.

If you don't own it already, it would be better to get the S300 instead of S200 HONDATA, more user friendly, U can tune it yourself too.

DSM 450's will max out of their efficiency around 300 whp. Mine maxed out at 311whp and I had to switch to something bigger.

Everthing else on your list I agree with.

If you are not interested in touching the bottom end then don’t worry about opening the head up right away either. The changes to the valve train will definitely make it safer to gain higher RPM which you will need to attain the HP you are looking for. As far as your selection of parts goes, I would recommend sticking with 2.5” IC piping as it will help not only with achievement of full boost at lower rpm but also with fitment. The only other change that will be necessary will be larger injectors than 450cc. Even on a set of 650cc you may see 100% duty cycle at higher rpm. You also will need to upgrade the fuel pump to support the additional flow.

Would a GT35R work? I know were I can get one for cheap or should I just look for a GT30R?

Like I said I don't really want to go into the block. If I can hit 399-401 I'll be happy. I just want something reliable and fun to drive daily.

Well looks like 2.5 is what I'll be looking for then.

Does it hurt to get a bigger TB if you can get a portmatched intake and TB for the price of a regular TB?

Thanks for the info. Its been awhile since I've been into the Honda scene and didn't realize there was a S300.

RC 550s maybe? Or go bigger than that?

I still think the GT35 is too big for a street setup but its a personal opinion. I like quick spooling turbo's they are much more fun to drive daily.

Don't sleeve for now, if you blow it up, then its time for sleeves.

larger TB and port matched intake mani are a plus. If you can get them for the same price, then do it. Normally for the price they cost, the gain is marginal. But don't you already have a TB with your motor?

I would get 750CC injectors, just in case you decide to up the boost later, you have room to grow. I got 1000cc, cause I got a good deal on them.

Yes the engine already came with a TB and intake mani but its a port mached 70mm GSR intake with 74mm TB for $250.

I might look into 800+cc injectors then because I want to upgrade after AIT.

I am with Mike on the S300, save the money you had planned to spend on the valves and larger IC piping and buy the S300 now. You will be much more pleased over having to buy chips, burner, RTP, etc....

In regard to the bold print...

Have you ever been in a 300whp Honda? 300whp is a more reasonable goal for reliability and fun. Besides, 400whp on a stock block is most definately pushing it, especially if you want a reliable setup. You'd have to keep your "toe out of the carbuerator", which isn't fun, and isn't what you want. You want fun AND reliable. Use a disco potato or maybe the GT30R, which is enough for 500whp, and boost around 15psi. That's fun and reliable, assuming you have a solid tune.

I've done what you're wanting to do and I'd sleeve it for that much power in a DD. It can be done on stock sleeves, but for a DD you want some margin for error. I'd also use ARP main cap studs because my main caps started shifting when I was making 408 on my B16A2, which will require a bore/hone of the main journals (be careful who you have do that, as aluminum mains+steel caps can be tricky for a machine shop that isn't very familiar with Honda motors, I had RLZ do mine and they did a great job), and of course ARP head studs. I used open-deck Darton sleeves and they worked fine for 400+ WHP.

Turbo size doesn't have to be very big, I made over 400 WHP with a GT3071R, and almost that much with a GT28RS with an ATP T3 turbine housing. The car was faster (slightly lower ET and trap speed) and more fun with a few less HP from the 28RS, just because it was such a freak for spooling so fast/hard. Cody's manifolds flow very well, he makes some excellent long collectors (I used one of his SST's -w- a 3" downpipe to a 3" TR exhaust, so you can get a lot out of a relatively small turbo with one of his manifolds.

I drove mine for years like that and it was reliable, it was my only car. I eventually sold the motor, and I hear it's still running today. Now I have a shitbox DD and a gutted track car with a bigger motor, but I really enjoyed my 408 WHP DD Civic, it was pretty fun, although you will quickly find the limits of street tires with it.

Like others have said, 2.5" piping worked fine, bigger (750cc is what I used) injectors, and S300>S200, although I took the baller option with the AEM EMS and COP.

Get it tuned by someone good, jDogg does all my tuning and I've got no complaints.
