HELP! need alarm badly!!
Im new to this forum. I own a civic hatch with with a older Type R motor and residing in NJ soon to move back to Chicago. WASSAP Everyone! Well my car got stolen now 2 times. Both times only stereo was gone. But now its getting on my nerves. Im thinking about getting an alarm system but dont know what to go for. I hear Viper/Python and Avital(better price) are pretty good. leaning to the Avital b/c of better pricing. Im thinking of geting one with a pager with 1000 feet live transmitter. I really hope F'in crooks will run their *** when the alarm goes off. Please recommend.
alarms only deter theft. But in chicago a two way alarm like the http://www.directed.com/ units is the only way to go. Along with a tilt sensor, battery backup and a ton of hidden kill switches.
At least you'll know when they are flatbedding your civic away.

I work at an A/V Shop. Stay way from Avitol and and company of DEI.
Unreliable lots of service. look for a decent brand name and good warrenty. I run an autostart. It was fine for the money

List the reason that you say this. I been selling dei units for years and never had any problems. Other then that they stand behind there products if installed by a dealer.

Best advice given in this thread
If you layer up your security system and make sure the install is up to par you will have a good defence to keep your car. Do not put stickers on your car saying that you have lo-jack or any other tracking device. This makes it easier for them to get it by going for that unit first. Look at the dei gps tracking unit too. Best bang for the buck if installed right. Not just thrown under the dash

Wow, some1 really hates DEI. i always knew DEI as strong products and stand strong for their stuff. When you guys mean mutiple kills switches does this mean multiple Fuel cutt off switches?? If so where are some good places for these stitches??
Fuel cut off, injector kill, ecu kill, ignition kill, plus whatever else you can think of. As far as DEI goes they stand behind their product stronger than just about any other company out there.

Yup if you get an alarm an do it right you will be ok. I have a 98 civic an it had a shitty alarm in it, but it saved it twice up here in VA. A buddy installed the first one with quick connects not good. Dont think they were professional car thieves tho. I just replaced the alarm with this CS 2016 DP crimestopper. I soldered all the connections this time. It has remote start also for those cold places. Soon to add siren with back up battery an some cut offs.

For a dealer yes, For a consumer DEI wants nothing to do with you.
Realistically their are very few manufacturers outside of DEI so its not like you have much choice in the matter.
I'm not saying DEI products are bad but I prefer to buy other options if they exsist.

Well you got some good advice and some bad, [inaccurate] advice.
There are many good alarms out there, any DEI and Compustar are probably at the top of the heap, good reliable product with good support, others are Audiovox/Prestige, Crimestopper , UNGO, even the Autostart/Polarstart all are reliable with good support, if purchased at an authorized dealer, if not from an authorized dealer there is no guarantee it's even the real thing, and a installation at an authorized dealer, with most brands, will get you a lifetime warranty on the alarm and the install.
Here's the rub, "install is everything", it makes no differance if it's a top of the line brand name alarm with all the options, if it's not installed properly, it will not be effective, even an entry level basic alarm installed properly is a deterrent, hell even just a flashing LED is a deterrent, and that's what it's all about deterrent.
There is truth in the saying "if they want it they will get it", take my word for it, I don't care what you have, I could haul your car away and it would never be found.
However, the more deterrents, [layers] of security you add, the harder and longer it will take to get your car, and I guarantee you that 99.9% of car thieves do not have a fully shielded trailer with a winch inside inside to haul your car into.
There are many "layers" you can add to your security system, some mentioned here, options like hood and trunk/hatch triggers should always be installed, [to protect all access to the car, a starter or ign. disable, or both, controlled by the alarm, most alarms come with dual stage impact sensors, but there are others that can be added, tilt sensor, glass break sensor, single and dual stage proximity sensors, and pressure sensors, IMO a properly installed and adjusted dual stage impact sensor is all that is needed.
A backup batt. or backup batt. siren is one of the best layers you can add, as would a second hidden siren, I use backup batt. sirens and hide the alarms siren.
I am no fan of Lowjack, but GPS tracking is a very good idea.
Most other options on alarms are for convenience, door locks, [key-less entry] trunk release, adding window, sun roof modules, although a hood lock wouldn't hurt.
Then there are the "redundant" layers, kill switches/disablers not controlled by the alarm, they can be "active", [you have to turn them on] or "passive", [they turn themselves on when you turn off the ign.] and require you to "reset" them to start the car, keep in mind you do not want to install so many that you need a check list just to start the car. One or two at the right place(s) is all that is needed IMO, one small hidden 1A on/off switch can be used to shut down the fuel pump, injectors, ECU/ECM and some engine sensors.
Even existing switches in your car can be used as part of a disabling system.
The best advice I can give you is go to an authorized retail dealer, have a look at what they have, ask to see an install, ask how an install would be done.

The new lo-jack with ews or any gps tracking is killing car theft rates and is catching theives out here is so-cal according to my chp friend. As long as it installed right. Theives do not have a fully shielded trailer so they are dumping the car to see who is watching them and the cops are whatching them. Its a cat and mouse game now with cars. I just found out there was a chop shop busted in carson ca, because of lo-jack.
I am not a lo-jack rep so this is no free advertisment or endorsement. But stating what I was just told from him. Fcm, how is your crime rate up there? Are you guys selling alot of gps tracking or anything of sort?

^^^ Now this is hilarious stuff right here. Autostart is a part of the DEI family now.
Wow...some peeps are just brand fanatics
Wonder how is he knows that.

^^^^^^^^ ooooooooooo snappppppp. You beat me to it.lol. I rather have a clifford or viper responder unit compare to a autostart. Maybe dei will turn that company around.
Yeah, listen to the idiot that doesn't even look at the sticky at the top of this forum. He and the guy that can't even put a coherent sentence together. Threads like this remind me not to waste so much time trying to educate the internet.
wrx, I invite you to come haul my car away. I'd be on you like a brutha on bbq ribs. How many days head start do you want?
