i was just wondering when it is safe to switch to a full synthetic oil on a new engine? milage? thanks

 

I'm pretty sure u can, u can't switch back to reg oil if u go syn.

 

I think thats only true for older motors with old gaskets. I use cheap oil for the first few "purging" oil changes to get all the debris out of the new motor then go right to synthetic.

 

everyone has their own opinion on how long you should wait before switching to synthetic on a fresh engine build.

i would wait until about 1000miles.........maybe people will say diffrent but that's what i like to go by........

 

i've read and this is what i plan on following when i crank my motor im building. Run some cheap non-detergent oil for the first 50-100 miles. lets the rings seal. oil change to a non-syn. oil up to 1000-2000 miles. oil change. then run the best you want there after.

read up on how to break in a motor because every engine builder will give you their opinion.

 

anyone else? i was thinking about 1000 miles myself but didnt know if it really mattered.. i know the rings can take up to 1000 or more miles to get a 100% complete seal. damn i only have about 300 miles on it so far ahha

 

There prolly no right answear, but i would think the best time for synthetic would be at first startup when the major wear occurs, I personaly think the rings are gonna seal with or without the synthetic if your running boost and its on a dyno getting hammerd on right away....

 

After my engine was built, we did initial start-up, ran through the first couple non-synthetic oil changes.

After that, straight to the dyno for tuning, drove home roughly 250 mile. I then made the switch to full synthetic.

This was reccomended by Tony Palo, who assembled and tuned the engine. I know how you guys value his opinion

 

Thats prolly what majority of people do and works, plus synthetic is expensive

ive never ran synthetic personally, and probably never will...

but i agree with the statement "everyone has their own opinion of how to break in a motor"

I broke my fresh LS/Vtec build last year by driving it pretty normally... high RPMs and all... no boost though, then after about 1000 miles i slapped the turbo stuff back on and tuned... and its still goin strong to this day, no problems at all

 

id wait until you know for sure the rings are seated. atleast 1000miles but to be safe 3000 if you switch to fast it seems to take alot longer for them to fully seat if they ever do
