Isn't that kind of how they make mandrel bends? fill them with sand and bend them? but without the heat?

HAHA, no

They insert a "mandrel" into the tube so that when the tube is bent it maintains it's structure.

Definitely have heard of this technique, but that's a pretty good article. I have never seen actual pipe bent this way. It looks to be good quality. Might be worth trying.

Wow, I can't imagine bending up 12" pipe that is 1/4" thick this way. Man I bet this guy has some cool stuff sitting around

Great article. I have some friends with vintage race cars that told me about the old school way to bend header tubing.

REMEMBER TO USE DRYED SAND!!!! otherwise the pipe WILL explode.

I have tried to bend some 2.5" exh piping this way, but it didnt really work out. It defenately isent as easy as it looks.

i dont see too much "easy" in that article.. looks like it would take a pretty good amount of time and work to get a bend you can buy for not tooo much more than straight.

Seems like a really good idea. Pack the sand in tight, weld on end caps, then bend that ish in your crappy die pipe bender. Should come out better than the die bender alone, right?

It should be said, this method is not safe for roll cages

I know it has already been stated, but please USE OVEN DRYED SAND, otherwise you are working with a bomb.

is it possible to just torch the moisture out of the sand, or does this need to be done in an oven?

I might try this out, it'd be nice to know how to do this. Just doing some 2" pipe for my wagon so I'm not running an open cat
