z6 swap help please
HI im not new to the import scene but im new on honda tech. you guys are awesome. i have a 1997 honda civic hx with the d16y5 motor that motor is being junked. i just bought a 1994 honda civic with a d16z6 in it and that motor is beong buil for boost to go into my 97 i wanted to know what wiring mods i have to do to make that motor run smoothly. and vtec im wondering if economy vtec plugs are the same as true vtec on the z6. thanks a bunch
you will have to rewire the 5 wire o2 to a 4 wire, there is a thread here somewhere that explains how to do it. the distributor plugs are different on the z6 too, but the wire colors match up. im not sure if the y5 distributor will bolt on the z6 head. i believe all the other sensor plugs are the same. im assuming you will be using obd1 for the built motor, so you will need that conversion at the ECU and a ECU.
the d16y5 thats in it has economy vtec vtec-e and the z6 has true vtec and i wonder if the vtec plugs on the stock vtec plugs will work on the z6

Swap the harness from the Ex/Si harness into your HX chassis. Then you can use the same O2, the P28 (stock D16Z6), already wired for VTEC, etc.
Everything will be plug 'n play with the harness from the '94.
One Q though. Might wanna look into OBD laws in ur state first. You might run into problems since you're swapping a not only older engine into a newer car, but an OBD-I engine into an OBD-II car. Like in NY OBD-II scan test is required on all OBD-II cars which is obviously impossible on an OBD-I car.
Look into the laws before you do anything...I'm pretty sure in Cali it's also illegal to swap older engines into newer chassis but I'm not sure about that. So uhh...see what the laws about inspection testing and emissions testing are in your state..then you're gonna have to work from there.

Go to any junkyard and pick up a EX harness.
It'll save you so much trouble.
Then you can use everything off the OBD-I and the only thing you won't be able to do is OBD-II scan the car. Though you'll be able to jump the service connector for the code.
Get an 92-95 EX or Si harness and all your problems will be solved....
Everything will work, plug right up, etc. No extra wiring, no fabrication of any kind, EVERYTHING will bolt right in and plug right up.
If you do it as you're planning now you're just being stupid. Then you're going to run into issues running an OBD-II harness w/ an OBD-I engine, so you're gonna have to convert **** for the injectors and distributor, and you'll have to wire up a knock sensor (and since there's no place on the Z6 block you'll have to drill into the block to set up the knock sensor). It'll be a HUGE pain in the ***.
Just use a 92-95 Ex/Si harness and everything will work perfectly. Or try to convert your HX harness and face 101 problems.
I mean seriously, injectors will have to be rewired, as will the dizzy, O2 won't work, blah :-\
