Default OT: car insurance - who offers a multi car discount?

Since many itr owners have daily drivers, I thought I might get some good responses by posting this here.

My current insurance co. doesn't give me a multi-car discount like I've received with other companies. In that respect, I've been told by my previous agent that the multi-car discount was the insurance company's way of thanking me for insuring more than 1 car with them, i.e., giving them more business.

My question today regarding a multi-car discount on auto insurance is a little different. As I look to pick up a daily driver, I'd like to know if any auto insurance companies offer a multi-car discount that is based upon the premise that 1 human being cannot drive 3 cars at once. It irks me to pay full coverage on 3 cars, when not fewer than 2 of them are sitting in the garage at any given time.

Before somebody suggests it, I'm not interested in temporarily suspending liability coverage on any of them (aka storage insurance) as a ploy to save on premiums.

I have found that you receive more discounts when combining insurance of different types, for example, USAA gives me a nice discount for carrying both car insurance and homeowners with them.
I do get a mutli-car discount for insuring 3 cars with them, and the rates are very good.
For 2 type Rs and a TL-S I pay around 150$ a month, full coverage.
State Farm had really good rates and discounts too, but they treated me very badly over an accident that wasn't my fault, and ultimately refused to fix my car back to the condition it was prior to the wreck.

I've been very happy with their rates. I have 2 vehicles fully insured, 1 vehicle with liability only and renter's insurance, all for 33% less than Progressive insured me for 2 vehicles (one with liability only).

State Farm is great. I pay less with 3 cars than i did with 1. They can give discounts for one car being a weekend car too and being driven less miles.

I'm trying to split a hair about multi-car discounts.

Are you guys receiving good rates because your insurance companies are happy that you're giving them more business, or do you receive good rates because your insurance company recognizes that you can only drive 1 vehicle at a time?

Yes!

Lets play this game the other way.
Which company is "refusing" to give you a multi-car discount (regardless of how or which way the hair is split).

Its labeled as multicar discount.

Unless you have military background, throw out USAA.

I don't believe they consider it that way, because there's no way for them to know which car you're bombing around in.

I'm insured by State Farm, and at one point had three cars with one driver. The ITR was listed as a weekend driver. The discount did not change when I added a fourth car, nor did it change when I added a second driver to the policy.

I would say that your discount is based on having additional business with that company, not the chance that your two parked cars are completely safe (because they're not - theft/hit and run/etc).

[edit] And I think my last comment is key - car insurance (depending on covereage, of course) covers the vehicle at ALL times, not just while it's being driven.

Yep, this is what I've been finding so far, that the multicar discount has nothing to do with the fact that one or more vehicles is always garaged while the other car is being driven. I was wondering if any insurance companies out there might buck the trend. I'm guessing not.

My auto insurance is with Traveler's. Their rates are lower my previous carrier, Allstate, even tho Allstate gave me discounts based on insuring 2 cars and my house.

I would get quotes from multiple companies. If they want to give you a multicar discount, or if they don't, that really doesn't matter; what matters is the total amount you must pay them.

You can try getting quotes from the websites that do so from multiple companies, like Insweb.com and Insure.com

Also, there are huge differences between companies when it comes to paying claims. What you don't want to have is a policy where they tell you "you're in good hands" but when you have an accident, all they give you is the finger (as I've experienced). Amica and USAA always top the surveys. State Farm is usually very good, in both surveys and in my own personal experience, despite Andy's experience otherwise.

You can look up survey results on satisfaction with auto insurance companies on JD Power's website and in the March 2006 issue of Consumer Reports.

USAA is the best... plain and simple. Default Coverages with 500 deductible and clean record im paying 61/month full covereage & for my ek an additional 30 bucks full coverage. Cant get much better than that.

I still recommend State Farm to others. My experience was probably not typical, and may have been more the body shop than State Farm. I kept telling them something was wrong and the body shop kept telling them the car was fine. I understand from their point-of-view, but violent jerking to the left at 35 mph is not torque steer as the guy initially claimed. (In that case the problem was that they actually gave me car back with one tire inflated to around 60 psi, and the other at about 18).
There is still something wrong with my car, suspension, I dont know yet, I've been slowly replacing, testing parts and it still has this problem.
(Although I'm beginning to suspect I got a bad tire.)
In defense of State Farm, 6 months after I switched to USAA I called and complained to them that I was having to buy new tires prematurely and that I still felt the tires had been damaged in the accident, and they sent a guy out to measure my tread depth, and he agreed that I was having to replace them too early, so they bought me a new set of tires.

What do you mean by "default coverages," just the minimum coverage? You're paying the same as I am, but I have 2 cars with full coverage (98 ITR & 2002 Civic Si) as well as a 3rd car with liability AND renter's insurance. My rate also includes twice the base coverage.

+1 This was AMEX and it now called Ameriprise. You have to have a Costco membership but I have my 3 cars through them and they have outstanding rates. They were also EXTREMELY helpful when this idiot hit me and his insurance didnt want to pay for OEM Honda parts.

I dunno how their mulitcar discount works but they definitely have good rates and service.

I might have to look into this. I've always wanted to get a Costco membership so I can buy 10 gallon drums of mayonnaise.

Remember, everyone's premiums are different - based on location (SC/GA is not the same as WI), driving record, age, etc. You can't compare what one person pays to another person whose characteristics are different.

Costco has other things for a true car enthusiast, in addition to auto insurance (I'm not familiar with the car insurance company they use, BTW) and of course their prices are very low:

- Mobil1 in 5W30 and 10W30
- least expensive long-lasting long-warranty high-CCA car batteries
- microfiber towels for detailing
- battery chargers
- tires (selection is limited)
- food samples to munch on when you go there for any of the above

and large screen LCDs/plasmas at VERY good prices.. I got a membership just to buy my TV there..

FWIW, I use State Farm. I'm single, and have 3 cars insured with them as well as my house (the race car has only theft/fire coverage, the other two have full coverage and my truck is listed as my DD) and I get a multicar discount as well as a multiline discount. I periodically check them against other insurers and (for me at least) no one has beaten them in awhile..

Auto insurance, especially on an ITR, is not something I'd just purchase from the lowest bidder. Too often, the cheap insurance companies give owners a hard time when they do file a claim. This includes low-balling replacement values, not covering any aftermarket items, or paying only for low-quality repairs.

Quality of service is very important IMHO.

^ Thats why I asked what would happen if my car was totalled or stolen. USAA said to save all similir itrs for sale and print out the ad, they would pay me what it would cost to replace the R if they couldn't find one exactly like mine since ITRs are a rare cars.

Allstate does give multiple vehicle discount.
When I had my 97 Civic Ex and a 2000 Type R on my policy I used to pay $470 for the Civic and $570 for the Type R (full coverage for 6 months). When I sold my Civic and took it off the policy my Type R went up to be $770!. I had to add my sisters car under my policy and I was able to get the old price back

Oooo did I mention that I have $50 deductible for collision and $0 for comprehensive

Yes, like I said above, Allstate gave me a multiple car discount. I left Allstate because their claim service following my R's theft was horrible. I will never again insure any of my property with Allstate.
