STS2 CRX question
I just got back my 88 CRX Si ...That I gave to my sister - she used as a commuter for a few years till she killed the engine....I got it back a few months ago and dropped in a used stock replacement import motor - a ZC single cam.
Now I want to get into autocross and liked the STS2 class because of some of the mods already done to the car which makes that class the easiest to start with.
Is this motor allowed?...it is the same stock replacement
Are bolt in roll bars allowed?...I didn't see a mention in the rules.
Thanks

I have no clue what came stock in those cars, but you need to keep the stock engine in it for ST2.
A bolt in roll bar is allowed, so is weld in, but the requirements are slightly different for each. Hopefully, a rules geek will chime in here, but you can just go get the full rules set here.

This sucks...now I have to look for a d16a6 and spend money and time replacing a perfectly good stock motor already in my car for a used and in who knows what condition motor.
Do they have a novice class that I can try?
This is the motor I bought: Same exact specs as a d16a6 only it is stamped as ZC.
I can get this car smogged legaly in Cali, but can't race it in an autox class?

Specs don't matter, the actual engine does. Otherwise, why swap to a different engine if its no better than stock?
And yes, you can autocross it. In Street Mod 2.

bolt in cages are allowed but why add the extra weight?
id get a6 and run sts2... less $$$ will be spent building one

Because, I wanted to get the car running...and you can get a good reliable stock motor for $400.00 complete.

The ZC is not stock, you've already said so. If the d16a6 is the stock engine (going off of what you said earlier), then only another d16a6 would be a stock replacement. Anything else is a swap. Swaps are not legal in classes that require the stock engine.
Really, stay swapped, and have some fun in SM2. Even if you put another D16 in there and could compete in ST2, its not like you really would be much more competetive at first. Driver skill is 90 - 98 % of autocross (opinions on exact percentage vary), and only the last 2 - 10 % is car. Every time I think "The car needs new parts" I let one of the faster guys drive my car. When they cross the finish line faster than me (and they always seem to do so) I know its not the car holding back my times. I've been autocrossing for 1.5 years, and still probably couldn't win an event if someone gave me last years winning national champ car to drive. It takes a lot of time, practice, and learning to become fast, and you won't be there any time soon.
Don't worry about classing. Don't worry about winning. Get out there, have fun, and learn. Later, when you start getting better, and decide that autocross is something you'd like to get serious in, then you build a car to a specific class to be competetive.

Yeah, that's actually a nice little engine. It's cammed a bit more than the US version.

Is the cam the only difference? If so, the OP could put a stock a6 cam into his motor and run STS2 that way. He'd still technically be illegal, but if he was honest with his competitors, told them what was up, and was willing to accept a dsq if his competitors felt it was necessary I don't see a problem. Hell, in my region, before STS was allowed motor mount inserts, we had a gentleman's agreement that we would use them for local events. This was because a couple of the guys had either worn mounts or a car that was prone to destroying the mounts. Communication and honesty are great tools in grassroots motorsports.

Compression might be different as well...I think it might have used slightly different pistons.
If he uses the oem intake and manifold, he might be able to talk his competitors into letting him run STS2. I'm sure a well-prepped STS2 A6 will put down more HP than a stock JDM version.

From the searching I have done on this board, it looks like the only diffrence is the cam.
I still have my d16a6...I'll take the cam and swap it. And do as you suggest let everybody know and see if they are ok w/ it. I just want to get some experience and later maybe rebuild my d16a6 or find a good used one.
I am just very competetive in all the sports I participate in and need to feel I am actually competing and not just running for the fun of it.
Thanks for the help
I'll leave the roll bar out and only put it back for track days!

Note that the timing may be off after you swap cams around. I would compare the A6 cam and camgear to the JDM A6 cam and camgear.
If you do this and that is indeed the only difference between the 2 motors, I really wouldn't worry about telling everyone, but I would point it out if someone asked and/or you start winning.

The butt dyno only measures torque, you can't feel horsepower.

my advice would be to run in SM2 with everything as-is for a few events and just have fun.
if you enjoy it, then spend the time and $ on race wheels/tires and suspension tuning. spend your first season just improving your driving.
if you want to take it a step further, then address the drivetrain. throw in a used JRSC or turbo on that engine, add an LSD, or do a different swap altogether, and you could have a real SM2 contender.
