how to change throw out bearing
hey i was think of getting a car from this dude but it needs a new throw bearing how hard is that to do and what will i need to replace??? oh yea where is the throw out bearing located????
The bearing is located over the input shaft on the tranny. You need to pull the tranny to access it. Basically, when you push the clutch pedal, the slave cylinder pushes on the arm going inside the tranny, which has the throw-out bearing on the end of it. The bearing rides the pressure plate and pushes the diaphragm in order to disengage the clutch.
Therefore, if the throw-out bearing is bad, you'll only hear it when pushing the clutch pedal. If you hear a grinding bearing noise when say pulling out in first gear and putting some load on the tranny, that's the input shaft bearing. It's a common failure in Honda tranny's that get beat on, and you have to open the tranny to replace it.
A throw-out bearing and an input shaft bearing are two very different fixes cost wise if your paying someone to repair it.

Why would you get rid of the tranny? You're going to need one so why not fix this one? Have someone that has experience to help you replace the bearing and you can learn too just incase next time it needs to be replaced. Besides, what if the next transmission you get has the same problem?

You have to pull the tranny off either way.. IF you don't have a problem with the current tranny there is no reason to replace it.. Just pull the tranny and replace the throw out bearing... While your doing it you might as well replace your clutch as well... You don't want to have to do it again.. I can drop my tranny in about 45 minutes by myself.. Putting it back in takes a little longer and its much easier with 2 people.. Get a good shop manual and then go for it...

Good call. When someone is dropping the transmission, I usually recommend replacing clutch, pressure plate, flywheel (resurface or replace), pilot bearing, release bearing, input shaft bearing, and rear main seal - that way, it is highly unlikely you'll have to drop it again soon afterwards (unless you screwed up the install, or have a catastrophic failure).
