I just baught a 1990 honda Accord, Help me with these problems.
So i just baught a 1990 honda accord and the previous owners smoked. How do i get the smell of smoke out. Someone suggested OZIUM (I think that's how it's spelled). it's supposed to be what they use in hospitals.
Also when i stick the key in the ignition, it simply doesnt turn. It's as if it's stuck or the wrong key. I have to "finesse" it just right to get it to turn and start. I have got it to turn but sometimes it takes 15 min just to find that "sweet spot". Any ideas on how to fix this problem. i thought it was the actual key so i had it remade and it doesnt help much.
THank you.

as far as getting the smell out I cant help you, unless you want to replace the whole interior. lol
it sounds like the tumbalers in the ignition switch is worn, and that you will probably have to replace that.

Get a stuffy nose. It helps relieve the smoke smell. Trust me. Or gas mask. It feels better than other suggestions.
Suggestion for smoke. I went around the web and found some people use dryer sheets. LOL ummm my idea was the Sharper Image air purifier. You know what I mean. Try like 2 car air freshners, baking soda? Try everything. You'll get a right combo.

doesn't it sound more like a mechinical problem, then electrial. Delano5050 said that it doesn't turn at all unless you get it justy right. Or will this cause the key to not turn?

There is some kind of graphite lubricant powder that may work. You can usually find it wherever they make keys. Good luck. Otherwise, I think the key lock cylinder will have to be replaced.
The key problem might be cured by a new key from the dealer; it could be that the key was cut just slightly wrong.
As far as the smoke smell, I've heard that putting an open dish of vinegar in the passenger floor board on hot/sunny days with the system on 'recirc' can help to eventually get rid of the smell.

So i gave the carpet and seats a good scrub with a carpet/auto cleaner. sprayed some OZIUM (that stuff works). and wiped down all the other surfaces.
And it worked really well, the smoke smell is almost comlpetely gone. I think after another cleaning it will be gone for good.
I figured I post this FYI, for future referance

Smoking like that KILLS the resale cost. Thats like THE #1 question for evaluating vehicle interior condition. Id expect burns, yellow film and smelly everything. Youd really have to scrub it for hours to get it off. At this point id just do some basic interior cleaning and hang a crap load of air fresheners from the mirror (littereally about 10 at once).
So far i'v been cleaning all the seats with turtle wax carpet cleaner. wiping down all the plastic and vinyl surfaces. and using OZIUM almost every night for the past week.
So far this has worked pretty well. (It's funny because i baught this car to resale it) I paid $250 for it.
The ignition seems to be getting better the more i try and turn it. I think the graphite lube is really beggining to help.
thank you for your posts
