Default Timing belt install gone wrong

Well I replaced the timing belt along with new cam gears and when I went to start the car its just dies right away. So I thought I was off be a tooth or so end up everything lines up good. What else could cause my car to die when I start it? Could it be that the belt is too tight?

if you arent sure you installed everything correctly, you should not be starting the car!

i hope you atleast tried to rotate the crank by hand a few times before starting it, which is what you are supposed to do.

If everything lines up and you are sure that the belt is installed correctly, start checking other things. Did you pull the plug wires off the dist? if so did you reinstall them in the correct order?

Just recheck everything you did, you'll likely find the problem.

Yes I rotated the crank before starting the car. All the lines line up good too so I know its now that. Maybe I did but the sparkt plug wires on wrong. Ill check that really quick. Any other ideas? like the belt being too tight?

it can be too tight but I cant see that keeping the car from starting. did you use the correct tensioning method?

definitely sounds like something else is mixed up somewhere, plugs/wires is a good place to start

if looking at the distro from the passenger side of the car, Im pretty sure the plug wires go like this

3 4
1 2

Ya I guess I put them on wrong or something. Thanks guys. Also now that its running its making a whinning sound from the belt. Will it be ok like this or should I loosen it up a little?

It's whining because it's too tight. It almost sounds like a blower

This could wear the belt out quicker and/or snap it.

Well right now theres about a 1/4 inch deflection in the front and very little in the back. So you think it should be a little looser?

Isn't it an automatic tensioner, I mean, how do you get it to be too tight or loose anyway? I just did this a few times trying to get my cam gears set correctly and I never had a problem with it being tensioned wrong.

by pushing the tensioner all the way tight with your hand and then tightening the bolt...

I used the coat hanger trick. Yall think that might have made it too tight?

Yeah, dont yank to hard on the coathanger , just hold some tension. I like to run the belts a tad on the tight side but don't let it get tight enough to whine. Also, the belt gets significantly tighter when the engine is warmed up.

same here.. I'd just loosen it up a bit.
