Default Homemade Intake (installed)

comments, suggestions, opinions welcome.

so i had a bit of extra cash on me and an extra filter lying around so i decided to make my self an intake

thats what it looks like, only i zip tied the neck of the filter to that metal bar down there (not shown)

its not 100% stable down there. maybe like 80%. where do you think i should permantly set the filter?

also, the stock box is still there. i just took out the stock filter and some oem piping and replaced it with my air duct. i kept the stock intake box for the sake of the MAF adaptor.

without the intake box..
Connected MAF sensor: idles, 2 sec later. stall
Disconnected MAF sensor: im rev limited at 3.5k rpm

since im running the stock box w/o stock filter, do you think air gets in the edges of the box? if so, any ideas on how to fix that would be awesome.

thanks alot. this whole "homemade intake" may not be much but its something till i get more money for the actual legit intakes..lol

once again..

yea i think air is getting in through the sides of the intake box, since theres no stock filter.

i seem to go though 2nd and 3rd gear faster, but i don't know it may be all in my head

here's the problem with that setup...

the pipe you connected the filter too.. is "okay" i suppose but in a bad location really (as far as safety of the moto goes) but more over, that tube leads up to you intake box.. which is just a BOX and when you remove the filter... you'll notice that there is no "direct" flow from the pipe to the box to the intake arm... so the air just gets hella turbulant in there and doens't smoothly FLOW into the intake arm... so really for this whole project to be of ANY effect, you need to put that filter on the end of the intake arm, which just isn't going to happen with the MAF sensor being on the intake box

what CAN you do.. maybe make a pipe that connects the intake arm and tubing that the filter is connected too and put it inside the intake box - (if that makes sense)

Whats the point of the intake box then? Shouldnt the "intake" be attached to the tb like any other intake?

mate, i know a lot of ppl are mocking you, well, they have a little bit of reason to do so...

the whole point of an intake is to increase flow/efficiency of the air into the throttle body, with the CAI adding cold, dense air (more oxygen) to the mix.

now, what you have here is a weak intake, that may possibly break off at anytime. not to mention the tubing you have will have ***** flow, the ripples in the tubing will not cause good air flow. additionally, the stock airbox, as discussed above will just cause as another point of turbulance, and as such will decrease air flow.

you have 3 options to improve the situation you're in right now:

1) return hte intake to stock (best bet for you right now)!
2) re-do the intake, with smooth materials (3" PVC -ghetto- piping, or preferably metal piping) and replace the stock airbox with this smooth piping
3) buy a real intake, there are plenty of CAI's and SRI's which will make a huge difference to your current setup.

Either way, i'd strongly suggest you dump your current setup, you have a nice car, please don't ruin it for hte sake of $100/$200 saved on an intake (it'd be much better to return to stock) - also, no i'm not against home made intakes, i've made them before for cars, and they worked very well, as tehy were thought out and engineered well, using the right materials

^^ yea truth hurts

im stock right now because im going for a long drive tomorrow and i dont wanna take any chances. i'm taking your, and probably everyone elses advise to return to stock for good, unless i come up with more ideas including getting rid of the box, using un-rippled piping, and something with a legit MAF adaptor. (probably not going to happen).

so my 22$ investment was a fail

but whats trial and error without the error right guys?! lol

good for you, you've made the best decision there...

take solace (sp?) in that 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' - at least now you know why most of us pay the higehr $$ for the name brand intakes

good luck to you with your mods

All I can say is... it was probably a waste of time and money. But, not too bad... good creativity.
