I live in Seattle and I am shopping for a car. I found one but is has a swap. He says it is not stolen but doesn't have papers. What could I do t verify that it is not stolen?

Until you get pulled over, that is.

the vin number has to get ran first before its able to be on the road. If the car is eligible to be on the road you might have to fill papers out becuz of the swap unless the guy u are getting it from already filled out the papers for the vin on that engine already. My friend got it done when he got his si at a police auction. The car ended up bought w/o a lot of the major parts. So he had to fill out a lot of papers and it took him about a few months for it to get registered to be on the road.

Get Washington State Patrol to run the motors numbers.
They did it to me before. I got pulled over on I-5 in Tukwila for speeding. They went over every inch of my car. My motor came back with a 'hit' because I bought it from a junkyard and the car it came from was a theft recovery. I was let go with just a speeding ticket.
It's nice buying your favorite car already with a motor swap.
But it's even nicer when you do it all yourself, cause then you KNOW the true history.

I'm an audio guy and I thought if the car came with a swap it would be better to pull all the wait of the batteries and subs. So just get the VIN off the motor and send it to state patrol? Thanks felas for the wisdom.
They're not THAT bad. They only get into searching your car if they have reason to beleive that your car shouldn't be on the road (illegal/unsafe), you did something majorly stupid (racing), or if they think your car is put together with a bunch of stolen parts. Then again if they just want to be mean and they have nothing else to do, they might search your car. State patrol usually gives people crap the most here. Local cops are generally okay.
For the OP. You just call WSP with the VIN numbers from the motor to confirm that its not stolen. It also helps to match the VINs with the casting numbers under your engine code at the dealer to make sure a change of VIN wasn't done on the engine.

This was 3 years ago. Being stupid and just cruising at 80mph around 2am on I-5, I got pulled over by WSP. The first thing he asked was if I had motor swapped the car. That's a first....didn't even get a "...do you know why I pulled you over?...", speech. The guy that pulled me over asked me to get out of the car and pop the hood so he could check out the motor. Even two more WSP cars showed up. I complied with all of his request because I had nothing to hide. An hour later standing on the side of the road in the rain, with a motor swap w/ a 'hit' and numerous aftermarket parts, he let me go with just a ticket.
Don't under estimate WSP. Car theft and stolen parts are so high in the area, they will go the extra mile to stop anything from getting out of hand.

What? It's STATE patrol. And at the inspections they DO look at the VIN on your engine most of the time. Maybe you got lucky. They usually check engine VIN, firewall, dash, and a couple other random spots.
