How important is this peice?
Number 2 in the pic:

I assume its a dust seal of some sort? I changed my axles the other day and I noticed this peice was loose, so loose it kept falling off... So I finally got it to stay in place long enough to bolt the axle in, but when I went to drive the car it sounded like I had a damn cat stuck in my wheel (screeching noise)... So I get it home and jack it up and sure enough this piece was loose spinning around causing all the damn noise... So I just pulled it off for now...
So is this piece important?
Oh, also isnt this the peice ppl remove all the time for B series swaps to make the axles fit correctly?

Not really... I am sure you will get some people on here that will argue that it is important, but all it is is a dust shield like you said. I'm pretty sure I have read a B sereis swap guide into 88-91 EF chassis where it told you to remove them before you install the axles, and I know I did when I put my B16A in my CRX.

So ppl run them like this all the time without reliability problems? (wheel bearing failure is my main concern)</TD></TR></TABLE>
mine work flawlessly.

Im pretty sure its the dust seal for the inner of the sealed wheel bearing. it is on the d series axles. you have to remove it to put a b series in. I dont think it is needed on a d series it might just make your wheel bearings last longer driving thru mud.

no it really is a dust deal. its rubber on metal. but with a b-series that rubber will catch the inside of your hub and snap the CV joint every sing time.
trust me, one day i broke 3 axles, i just about gave up, then i took one look at the piece, pulled it off with a pair of pliers and i have has smooth axles ever since. i learned the hard way so the rest of you dont need to make the same stupid mistake

the probably did on the integras, which is what everyone buys the axles for, then puts them on their EF.
