Default Which 5spd tranny would be the best for my d1577 '98 Civic?

I hear that doing a tranny swap on these cars can make it seem like you gained 30hp, and can easily knock a second of your 1/4. I hear Si-tranny's and EX trannys are good swaps.. any input? And how much would gas mileage go down on the car w/ a swap? Thanks!

Matt

sorry, but can u please refrase ur question, is it a d16y7 or a d15b7?? either or try and find an d16y8 tranny(96-00 ex civic) if u cant find that the next best thing is the d16z6 tranny(92-95 ex,si). hope that helps?? i dought that it will feel like u gained 30hp. but u might feel a bit quicker and or have a little bit better 1/4 mile time. hope this helps.

confused... are you trying to just do a manual conversion of an entire engine swap? It can SEEM like you gained 30hp, but it's just because you'll be a 5 speed instead of a 4 speed (a/t is 4 speed). You'll have better control of your gears, so you're not limited to what your ECU wants to do. You'll gain some HP at the wheels... depending on your current hp. EX and Si (d16z6 or d16y8 transmissions) are supposed to be the best. I was reading somewhere about CX transmission being best for turbo? Not sure if that's bs or not, but 96-00 EX (d16y8) or 92-95 Si (d16z6) are your best bet for n/a application.

Your 1/4 mile time is also dependent on your skill as a driver

nvm, i just looked in another post of urs and honestly before u throw money away like i just did, get a better d-series and or boost it, or go b-series. or just keep it stock and boost it. but wasting like 300-500+dollars trying to get like a d16z6 or d15b, d16y8. you might as well just buy one of those and spend the same amount of money but less time putting it together.

Y8 tranny is better because it has steel shift forks and it'll be newer - hence less mileage (hopefully).

You don't really need to worry though, because you won't be breaking trannies with your Y7.

No it's already a short-throw 5spd Bro But I currently have plugs/wires, Edelbrock Victor X intake manifold, intake hard pipe, headers, custom exhaust, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, spec-3 clutch, lowered/adjustable coilovers etc

ok, its been covered but ill be patient. the y8 tranny(96-00 civic ex) has the same gears as the z6 tranny (92-95 ex,si). BUT the y8 tranny is supposebly stronger because of steel rods or something like that(im not very much of a tranny guy, hopefully bense can come in here and clean this up for u). and the older tranny's the have aluminum rods.

Well as much as I would enjoy boosting this car, I guess my main goal would be to give my buddies 2001 3800v6 Grand Prix a good run, but I don't forsee that happening w/ him having over 100hp stock than me But I just want something that's pretty peppy for a daily driver is all..

Does a lightened flywheel help a lot on these cars?

Whats up with this Bense guy? How much he charge for a decently peppy tranny?

im guessing this is ur dd. so either boost it (prob low boost for a daily driver would be good). if u dont know alot about boosting look into it, it is fairly cheap. talked to a v8 guy the other day that is converting to a civic and u can boost that civic for around 1-2 thousand dollars easy. just giving u a heads up.

if u dont think it will be reliabe boost wise then i would do an engine swap if i were u and go n/a with some better sort of an engine. because the d-series motor doesnt get much power n/a unless u waste alot of time and money into it(more money than a motor swap or boosting it). just trying to help u out a bit.

If I had things my way I'd own a boosted ls1, but that's neither here nor there. I think I am going to look into boosting my D i think. It's just gonna take some time and research is all. I am NOT gonna expletive around with another engine swap though lol.

boost the D, best bang for your buck. As far as the tranny goes, d16y8 tranny is good (better than Si because of steel shift forks). However, if you find a jdm d15b tranny with LSD, that would be the best

But with a disregard to durability, which tranny offers the most pep? My buddy LOVES honda atv's and honda tranny's (not so much the cars though) and swears by them.. so I'm not too worried about busting one haha

try and find this guy named ''besnse'' on here and he will tell u anything and everything u need to know about the civic tranny's and gears and strength and what not.
