$600 exhaust manifold - '96 DX
The '96 Civic DX w/ 190k is my sig's car, it's driven every day. When we replaced the primary o2 sensor last month (another successful repair on this car, individual components are starting to fail but we're keeping our head above water re: repairs) we discovered that the exhaust manifold is cracked thru the threaded hole and beyond, preventing the o2 sensor from tightening all the way.
Dealer says:
Manifold - Part# 18160P2EA12 - $597.19
Gasket - Part # - $12.17
That's a lot of $$, thus still driving around w/ cracked manifold. Is replacing the manifold the only option? Must that option be that expensive?
Thank you -
RWS

You can either pay the full price from Honda or get some from Ebay for about $200 or so brand new.
What I did was go with the EX manifold and just extended the o2 sensor wire to reach the cat. I also replaced the exhaust system to 99-00 Si cat/exhaust. Car runs perfect and no more exhaust manifold cracks.

you can get a good condition y8 manifold for a lot less, just look around. Also EGay has some performance headers for $40 shipped, or you can get Megan Racing headers for around $130. The Megan Racing ones are not actually that bad.....

his problem is his cat is a part of his header, if you get a header make sure to add a cat underneath, basically whawt EL Vap133 did, i did the same.

so in reply to all: i have the factory book at home, but i don't have the stuff memorized
this car has got the smallest most basic motor...is that a Y8? (i thought it was a Y7...?) Or was turnsignalandy speaking about an upgrade? also re: racing headers, would a part like that not turn out well without other upgrades? the budget, unfortunately, is $0, so only parts that can work and play well with others are an option...
is a wiring job all that's required to use an EX manifold on this DX (is that maybe the Y8 menitoned above)? Why does an EX manifold not crack?
the $200 manifold on ebay is the same casting/same part as the $600 dealer part? if not, is there a quality issue with the non-Honda part? I do not know the details of the Honda parts scene.
don't have access to a welder at this time, but of course that is always an option
i like the multitude of replies, that's nice...

Yeah that seems to be a little extreme of a price... I don't know if this would work, but you may want to look into useing a 92-95 civic exhaust monifold with a seperate cat from the junkyard.. like what EL Vap133 did. I bet you could get a good used one of those for $50
My manifold/cat is doing the same thing on my y7... I already have a y8 cat laying around... I'm just waiting for the y8 manifold to come in the mail to do the swap out and do a custom catback out of extra stuff in the garage...
I'll let you know how that goes, if you're interested...

You could pay $600 for the same peice brand new from Honda
or you could pay $25 shipped for one on the classifieds
or you could pay $50 shipped for one off eBay and gain 1hp or so while you're at it. This would be my choice IMO

I have a used one sitting around that I got for free. I'll sell it to you for 40$ but just pay for shipping. Or pick it up, w/e. I also have an intake manifold, actually I have a whole DX motor just sitting around.

I don't think he wants an aftermarket one.

But what happens when that one breaks?

id say check around the local forums and see if you can find a member that is selling theirs for cheap because he needs to get rid of it...yeah their is the possibility that it might break again, but thats not very probable(unless breakage is a highly ocurring incident in these manifolds that i am unaware of). the manifold will probably take you half an hour if its your first time...but if you have a friend that is more familiar with cars its something that they could do in under ten minutes

Unfortunately it is a very common thing in that manifold. When I go to the junkayard and see EK's (even though they are not allowed to sell them due to the cat) I ALWAYS see the same crack on that stupid manifold!

If a person was to get a header off of ebay would a cat be nessecary?
Like would the length of the header match up to the rest of the exhaust?
I know the cat needs to be there for o2 reasons, but what if a person got an o2 sensor block thing to trick the ECU?

Not at all sir, we are all here to learn from each other. That's why I ditched the crappy DX manifold and went with the EX one.

It is not necessary but if you live in a state that requires emissions testing then you do need to pass.

Just as a piece of advice, NEVER GO TO THE DEALER!!! unless you absoutly have to. First you could go to a junk yard and get one for way less than that or you could get up on ebay and get like a dc sports for like 250.00 or if your just cheap than you can get a cheap ebay one for like 50-75 bucks either way you go you wont spend anywhere close to 600 bucks

Depends on your local laws. Here in CA they cannot sell it to you due to it having the cat stuck to it. By law, the junkyard is not allowed to sell one to you. Now the EX exhaust manifold does not have that ugly cat stuck to it so there would be no problem there.

Sorry to thread jack, but i just want to be sure.
I have not emissions laws, so i can get a header, slap it on and it will match up to the existing exhaust and just attach the o2 and Im good?
Will it throw a code?

hey man if I were you I would just grab a y8/ex header from a junkyard and a y8/ex cat and get an o2 simulator and since you're already working on your exhaust, why not weld on a muffler?
My y7 manifold is cracked as well but I'm just waiting until it throws a CEL or the entire thing blows up before I get me a y8 mani+cat.

i got a 97 with the same exact crack your talking about. if you can find a header and a cat that are in decent condition in a junk yard then more power to you. find an ex header and find a cat that fits.
