I will always say that a canon is more user friendly than nikon.

i'd say canon...even though i have a nikon d70...i've used a 30d..and i all i can tell you is...its a nice camera....i've always wanted one but i got a good deal on the d70 and i couldnt let the deal go...i cant say the 30d is better then the d80 cause i've never used one before..but if i was to choose between the two id get the 30d..but its your choice.

it's pretty stupid to jump into slr photography and buy a brand new camera in my opinion. I would get a cheap rebel or d50 and start from there.
oh and I personally like canon more because of the lens selection and pricing.

I would say the Nikon but I am biased of course. It all depends upon the FEEL of the camera to you. One person above said Canon because of user friendliness. Personally I think the Nikon is MUCH easier to use. Thats all a matter of what you are used to and how you think however. I was SOLD on the Rebel XT by looking online and all the pics I saw and everything. As soon as I went and held both cameras and played with them... I went home with the Nikon. It just fits my hands better and I prefer the button layout. The camera's VS eachother is going to be a NEVERENDING argument. However... for a first timer... it will be a long time before you can take the pics that are good enough for you to tell the difference anyway. I LOVE my D50 and am about to step up to a D80... Canons are GREAT cameras that take beautiful pictures. I just am not used to them... Its all about what YOU want/need... Go out and play with each of them... that should make your decision.

oMG...you are comparing two cameras that are not exactly the same. IMO, the 30d > d80. BUT! ...you should buy according to your experience. personally...if you're new, i don't think you'll want to buy either camera. well, possibly the d80.

the 30d is targeted to more "experienced" photographers.

hince, i'm getting a 30d next year! w00t w00t!

well said, i have an olympus, but i held a rebel today and it felt very cheap compared to my e-500. Play with it before you go to ebay and sell your life away.
