A couple of questions:

Is the motor broken in? If so, what was the method?

Was the head rebuilt?

Was this test taken with the engine fully warmed up?

i finished it yesterday....started it up checked for leaks....today around 12 i went around my neighborhood to see if there was power loss and there was....so i brought it back home then a couple hours later when the engine was cold i did the test.....

i bought a bare head and built it..

Ok, so let me make sure I understand this correctly.

The motor is completely rebuilt. This means new pistons, rings, seals, pumps, etc. and the head has new valves, springs, retainers, guides, seals, etc.

After you took it out it, felt a little low on power. I don't know what your mods are but you really have to get it tuned for it to run properly

Okay, I think you need to get it tuned on a dyno. This will properly get the rings seated.

I don't think your motor is properly broken in, ie rings not seated.
Get the motor tuned then your compression numbers should be more even.

if it was re-built with stock components then a stock ecu is okay. But it still needs to be broken in.

If you have anything in it that is a real power adder (cams, higher than stock compression pistons, port work, header) then it definitely needs tuning.

The simpliest way to breakin a engine, dyno tuning.

Even if the rings arent fully seated yet, they should all be fairly close. Theyll just be low and fairly close, if that makes any sense. Do you have access to a leakdown tester? They can save you a ton of time.

Right after I built my motor before I ever started it on a cold motor--my numbers went from a low of 255 to a high of 265--like combustion said, even if the rings aren't truly seated yet, they should be pretty close. A leakdown is your best bet right now--maybe a valve isn't sealing that well, a leakdown will tell you where air is leaking from. Also, you MUST make sure that all the spark plugs are out of the cylinders and that the throttle is open 100% on each cylinder.

i was always under the impression that consistensy is more important than the numbers themselves, as the gauge could be innaccurate etc.

DO NOT run this engine with stock P72, vtec has WAY too much timing. You WILL blow up the engine, especially with stock GSR cams being there...

stock GSR ecu has very agresive timing map for VTEC. On top of that stock GSR cams on high static compression engine will result in very high dynamic compression as well, and result is nice torque, but also blown engine if you do not have fuel with high enough octane rating.

So you kind of get double trouble here, you increased compression by putting in JDM pistons, and as you use gsr cams they are too small to effectively do what cams need to do with this kind of setup, not to mention that they do nothing for yur power, other than probably produce nice TQ down low ( at the risk of detonation)

I'll say again, do not run this with stock p72 and take it somewher to have it tuned.

if its obd2 no ( you techincally can but its NO WAY cost effective) just get an obd1 harness and a p30 or p28
