Default anyone else having transmision problems in their '02 civic

Im having trouble getting my car to shift from 2nd-3rd & 3rd-4th. I just purchased the car with 90,000 miles. Im guessing that the last person who owned it drove it hard and messed up the linkage, but i wanted to make sure that this isnt a common problem. Also if anyone knows a good site that shows how to replace the clutch, please let me know.

Not a common problem... and no recalls that I know of...

Could just be a linkage problem like you mentioned... let's just hop it isn't internal.

I think hard shifting is quite common with the 7th gen, bud. I've had it in my EM2, where all it required was some lubrication both on the shifter box, and the cabling. My sister's EM2 also has the same issues, and I know I've seen it on the forum before.

Never really had an issue with mine that I can think of... only thing I had with the driveline was a little biding in my B&M shifter due to lubrication issues... but nothing major.

Interesting.

Well. I've got some good news. the problem completely went away, along with an annoying rattling sound which i couldnt figure out. My guess is that i had a rock or some other piece of debris caught in the linkage. Thanks for all the replys

iwantspeed... just roll or drive a couple of mm forward or backwards (depending on if you're looking for 1st or reverse). It's just cos the gears aren't quite "in mesh". I have to do it quite a lot when selecting reverse.

Usually when my car won't go in reverse, I just let off the clutch and push it back in once or twice and it works.

Same here, but, I'm talking about an overall sticky feeling to the shifting mechanism. I'll have a chance to take a better look tomorrow.

I have the same exact problem in my 01 civic. For me its only second gear, and rarely, mostly in the low rpm range. Now its starting to spread to 3rd gear. I think the cold weather definitely has an affect. I think shifting back to first and then back to second helps. I think its the syncro's but who knows. Some days ill get in my car and second gear will refuse to work, period! Then other days it'll grab everytime. Its definitely a thorn in me and my civic's side.
