took off PS today, now it won't turn, do I have to much fluid in rack and pinion steering?
it's in a 1995 ex coupe D16Z6 engine, i took off the belt and it drove fine, disconnected everything (the pump, and all three lines going to the rack and pinion and plugged them up) I going into the car, started it up but can't really move the wheel, I think there is to much fluid in the "steering shaft" and when I turn there is no room for the fluid to go so that's why I can't turn. Does this make sense? So all I think i have to do is take more fluid ouht and it should ba fine, right? any help would be great.
Makes sense to me. If you looped the input and output. Disconnect one end, turn the wheel all the way in both directions (should shoot fluid out of the open ends) then loop it again. You don't really need/want any fluid in the rack. The actual mechanical bits are floating in grease where the rack meets the pinion.
ya man. if you plugged the fluid ins and outs than thats like blowing into a straw with your finger on the other end. that fluid needs some where to go. and i would recomend leaving a little fluid in there to keep them lubed up and keep from locking up while driving. i left all the stuff on mine i just looped the line. dont plug it...
what do you guys mean by looping the in and output? I think I know but would like it explaned how it is done better. thanks
PS rack has two hoses on it. One in, one out. When you remove the PS pump, you typically remove the hoses too. To keep water from getting into the rack and messing it up, you use a piece of hose to loop the input to the output.
